Also it is a 98 chevy z71 and it has the stock alt. It has a place for an extra battery but I don't know if I hook up an extra battery will help. Does anyone know if hooking an extra battery will stop damage or would I be better off geting a new alt or somthing.

There are 3 main wires in your cars electrical
charging system.
a big 3 is adding to/increasing the size of those wires.
theres lots of how-to's out there.
google it.

I think I all ready killed the alt. It doesn't runn as good as it used too. What size would be best and where can I look at high output alt's.

I am going to take it to a shop to get it tested to be sure.

power cable size is based on two things:
current draw and distance run.
www.the12volt.com has a power and ground cable size guide on the menu down the left of teh front page.

as for alternators, try www.4alterstart.com
