NOW the dates for this to be complete are august or September. have problems with some box's and have to be replaced. this is not a rumor this is a fact!! some box's like the cardless HD boxs are not take'ng it to well!! i myself and buddy each have two each (subs we pay for)that now need replaced! there black dead no power at all. they did it at the same time so it must of been something in the stream that they did. i have also been told ther's a list of sub receivers that will not take it and now have to swapped out. so now the date is pushed back. and they can not say for sure it will be done by then!! this is good news for all it gives the coders extra time now!! as i have said over and over they have been jumping into this with blind folds on they don't know what there doing themselves!! ther's now A LOT MORE COST in the nag3 change over!! there bills is being run up on this one. |

I am not too familiar with all the details of this particular subject of discussion, but I think both of you are right. King is talking about hardware method of compression in DN's new distribution and this can also be achieved in hardware/software combo you are talking about in Viewsat HD. Each party may have their own reasons for their specific approach. |

The difference is you don't need a big processor and need less memory( no hard disk) but flash memory. With my experience in electronic, i can't see why a new hardware from DN cannot be made easily by FTA receiver maker. For make simple, the only thing to replace is the video card which on VS MaxHD can be replace for new one. The smart card is a mathematic co-processor and can be add in a software, but the receiver will be too slower and can affect the other function. This is a threads which we had discussed many time and my opininion is always the same on it. So few receivers can work on new technology but new receiver can de need for most case. |

Gold Member Username: TapemanNew York Citay in-HD, NY Post Number: 4263 Registered: Oct-06 | Usually SD is encoded in MPEG2 HD is encoded in MPEG8 But today's encoders can encode SD channals in MPEG4 It can save half of the bandwidth MPEG2 is over 15 years old totally outdated Many broadcasters are still staying SD But not the providers Therefore slowly DN converting all SD to MPEG4 Older boxes by DN are only MPEG2 And to be able to get SD it will require MPEG4 boxes To those who don't know much about satellite bandwidth cost One channel encoding at 5Mbps uplink cost about $5000 and about $15000 USD for downlink I get this from Intelsat at satcon 2008 So it costs aout $20,000 USD per month to maintain one channel in space Where as if yo encode MPEG4 at 2.5Mbps it will only cost about $10,000 USD per month Yo can broadcast 2-MPEG4 channels at same expenses of 1-MPEG2 ch Therefore why not cut yor monthly cost by half if switch to MPEG4?
