I'm looking for a good set of floorstanders in the $1,000 price range for my Yamaha RX-V992. I'm currently using a pair of 15 year old Fried Betas. I listen to mostly jazz music and have heard from a few on this board that Yamaha receiver's have atendency to sound very bright with some speakers.

Any suggestions?

while i don't have specefic models to tell you.

i will back up your observations about yamaha being bright.

and would pair it with a warmer speaker.

unlike jbl or klipsch!

Try Paradigm or PSB. I had the 992 for one day when it came out in 1997 and returned it because of it's brightness and thinness. Paradigm and PSB have always gone better with Yamaha than anything I have heard. Give the Paradigm Monitor 7 a listen and I bet you'll like what you hear.

Are Axiom speakers only available by mail order/internet? I have deep reservations about purchasing speakers without auditioning or comparing them against others in a showroom, even if they can be returned!

Kegger-

I did hear the Boston Acoustics VR2 which I very much liked. Unfortunately, they had to be with a Marantz receiver so I'm not sure how they would work with my Yamaha.

robert that is why "unlike others" I prefer to get
the speakers I want then match the amp/reciever to them.

that way you don't limit yourself of speaker choices.

but that is me!
I would hate to find a pair of speakers I love
and have them not work with me setup!

I guess that means you would have to pretty much purchase both at the same time.

LOL! that could get pretty expensive now, couldn't it.

I would imagine an alternative would be to be able to take your receiver to the showroom and actually audition it with the speakers of your choice.

no most people have some form of amplification
when they decide to move up to really good speakers.

you bought your reciever first! did you not have speakers?

no you had speakers now your looking to get better ones.

that's all i'm saying. not knocking how you are doing it.
your are doing it right for what you have done.

I was just mearly pointing out if someone does it the other way.
that they could go with whatever speaker they like.

to me there is no right or wrong way to do it.
just as long as in the end you end up with a matching system.

I just prefer not to be locked into certain speakers!
that's just my preference.

Actually, it's like the chicken and the egg thing...

I don't know about most people, but I'm in a constant state of upgrade when it comes to my components. I've been buying separate items for over thirty years.

Ok Kegger-

You don't have any partcular models in mind, but you say I should stay away from JBL and Klipsch.

Are there any speakers out there that would offset this Yamaha "brightness"?

Elitefan-

I haven't heard the PSB's, but I was able to audition the Paradigm against the Boston VR1 and I thought the latter, although about $300 cheaper, sounded a lot better. But that was with a Denon receiver.

You know, come to think of it....I never thought the receiver would make a noticible difference in a speaker's sonics. This next time I go and listen (audio stores just love me because it takes me several visits before I can make a decision), I may also have them do an A/B test with each speaker and a different receiver instead of the other way around.

lately robert i haven't done much speaker shopping.

i've been rebuilding or building my own.

but generally b&w are one of the warmer speakers.

it's just that klipsch and jbl are definately bright.
