Frustrated: Onkyo TX-NR801, HK 630/430, NAD T762

I am trying to find an AV receiver for $1,000 or less. I have been reading this very informative board for a while. There seems to be a lot of enthusiasm around the HK 525 and the NAD T762, less so around the Onkyo SR800. Unfortunately, the HK AVR 525 has now been discontinued, per a call I made to HK this week.

I am therefore trying to decide between the Onkyo TX NR801 (the internet enabled replacement for the SR800), the HK 430 or 630, and maybe the NAD T762 if the benefits are truly compelling enough (It's a bit out of my price range, especially if I consider sales tax, but I guess I could skip meals or something).

My dilema is that the Onkyo looks great on paper, but the comments here do not seem so great. IMHO, based on a trip the local CC today, the new HK line looks flimsy (especially the lighted blue volume knob, which was already wobbly in the store) and I'd prefer it be a little more traditional looking. The NAD has the above mentioned price problem and there seems to be an issue with bugs.

I have Paradigm Studio 60 front speakers and a Paradigm center speaker.

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.

Anon,
The HK 525 is widely available. I'm surprised your CC store doesn't have it in stock, and if they do maybe it will be heavily discounted. You can find it from $575-$650 at these authorized online shops. And they do price match.

You can also order it from Costco.com if you're a member. http://www.costco.com/frameset.asp?trg=subcat%2Easp&catid=79&subid=80&hierid=3840&log=&NavTop=

If you're willing to spend all of your $1000, I'd get the HK 7200 instead. Should be all the power you'll need plus no fan. You can find it for $1029 Shipping included here. http://ww3.onecall.com/PID_18440.htm

I'm sure others will chime in shortly. I think you might find the NAD 762 for roughly $1000 since the 763 has been announced. Hawk can verify this for you.

Thanks for the helpful tips. After way too much thought and another trip to see the new look of the HK's, I think I've decided to try to find a discounted 525 :-).

BTW, the T762 and DVD player mentioned above is a refurb unit. He sells the refurb NAD T762 by itself for $850, with a 20% restocking fee.

I have heard the NAD 762 with the Paradigm Studio speakers--easily one of the finest affordable systems available. It is a really special sounding package. I have sources for a new 762 for about $1K besides buying the refurbs from DMC. As much as I like the H/K, it has no where near the resolution of the NAD.
