2 Questions on Pyramid Amp

Anonymous
I will make this short and direct. I was thinking about purchasing these 2 Items ( http://shop.store.yahoo.com/soundsdirtcheap/pyrpa110watp1.html ) and ( http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=14993&item=3052995080 ). I want to know if they will work toegher just fine?, from what I have read they both operate on 8 ohms. Also I just have a shelf system, and I am wondering if you just run a wire from the cd player to the amplifer, and then a wire from the amplifer to the speakers?
Thanks for the help

Derek:

I hope you aren't looking at these two products for a home audio system because it would sound horrible. These two products are meant for commercial public address systems, hence they are truly quantity over quality. You will not get particularly good sound at low levels since the system is meant to be run at high levels. Likewise, at high levels, there will be a lot of distortion as neither product are meant to be "high fidelity." If you want them as an outdoor public address system, they should be fine together, but they are a waste of money otherwise.

Furthermore, you need some type of control amplifier (a Pre-amp) to control the Pyramid amp and I have no doubt your shelf system could not do it. Even if the shelf system did have system pre-outs (highly doubtful), the sound would be very poor. If you are looking to build some type of DJ dance club system, you will need a control amp and a decent CD player in addition to these two products.

What are you trying to accomplish?

Thanks Hawk, you have been very helpful. I was trying to buy a home sound system. I was mostly around car system and I didnt think 100W was alot. What do you recomend for a guy on a budget? One more question. What does a recivcer do? Can I just use my home shelf system instead?
Thanks for your help!

Derek:

Again, I have to ask what you want to accomplish because it makes a difference. I gather you are looking at getting a 2 channel system to replace your shelf system, but I want to be sure. The alternative is a five channel home theater (HT) system which can be used either in 2 channel stereo mode or a HT system to provide surround sound for both DVDs and music CDs.

I am taking a real stab in the dark as I don't know what your budget is, so lets begin with the following questions:

1. What is your budget?

2. What is the size of your room?

3. What do you wat to accomplish (stereo only or do you want HT capabilities)?

I am here to help.

Ok thanks. My budget isnt alot, I was looking at spending around $500 if I had to. I have roughly $1000, but I dont want to spend all of that. I want a Stero Only... I dont know the size of my room, but I would guess it is fairly big. Just something to listin to while I am havin a few bud's over.
Thanks for the help again!

Derek, you would be much better served with a pair of these http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806302049&skuId=5335942&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03044 Athenas. They list for $400 a pair but Best Buy sells them for $299 a pair. Marry them to an inexpensive Pioneer or Sherwood and you have a complete Stereo system for around the $500 price point. I would recommend the low-end Sherwoods in the $75 to $100 range and Pioneer in the $100 to $175 range. I lean more on good speakers so you can upgrade the amplification later to a Denon 1804 or Onkyo 601 (around $450 each). Getting good stereo sound is easy for under $1000 and you don't have to listen to squawky DJ equipment. You'll have a tuner, video switching a path to surround sound, a remote and MUCH better sound.

Hope this helps.

Ok one more post....haha.. Ok How does this little sound shindig sound? First start off with some Sony Floorstanding speakers( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826208460&skuId=5378833&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03044 )

Then add some rear sound ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806316624&skuId=5378799&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03043 )

And then to power it ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051806315456&skuId=5367836&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03031 )

and Finally a little something to play the CD's on ( http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1051826215121&skuId=5453617&type=product&productCategoryId=cat03034 ).

Do I need the CD changer, or can I use my Shelf system cd player and the recivcer? I can live with the price of all of that combined...

Derek:

Let me point you in another direction. Since you only want stereo, with high quality sound on a low budget (like everybody else including me), I would suggest the following components. First, a pair of Mirage FR-x3s, available from Audio Advisor for $149.99 (and shipping is free right now). See them here:

http://audioadvisor.com/store/productdetail.asp?sku=MIRFRX3CH&product_name=FRx-3%20Bookshelf%20Speakers%20in%20Cherry%20-%20Pair

Now, I also recommend an integrated amp to go with them. An integrated amp is just like a receiver, only it doesn't have any radio tuner built in. However, it has a control amp ("pre-amp") and a power amp built into the same box. And you would need a CD player to go with it. I recommend the package at DMC Electronics of the NAD C320bee integrated amp and the NAD C521i CD player for $479.00. See it here:

http://www.dmc-electronics.com/Default.htm

Just click on the box labelled "NAD Specials" at the top of the page and then after the screen changes, scroll down until you come the the package for the 320bee and the 521i. These components have been widely reviewed and uniformly praised for their superb sound and great bang for the buck value.

I will guarantee you that your "buds" will notice how great the sound is and the cost is just a bit over $600 for first rate stereo sound. You will never listen to a shelf system again.

Good luck!

No problem. Just costs a bit more money. I would recommend these then instead of the FR-x3s:
