Upgrade on a budget for newbie

I currently own a Yamaha RX-V590 receiver and the Bose Acoustimass 10 speaker system. I am unhappy with the sound quality of DVDs; the sound just doesn't seem "full" and I don't feel the surround aspects of the movies. I'm looking to upgrade my system in stages. I'd like to keep the total upgrade under $1000 if possible.

My two thoughts are that the RX-V590 does not support Dolby Digital (only ProLogic), and the Bose system does not have a powered subwoofer. What would you recommend to get the most bang for my buck first... new receiver, subwoofer, something else, or am I hopeless?

I would recommand

receiver : Kenwood VR-6070 (you can get it from
an authorized dealer starting from $389..
like 6th ave, Vanns.com, and/or BH Video )

Speakers System: AR HC-6 it is selling for
less than 500.

you can check out the specs yourself at AR's website.
http://www.acoustic-research.com/
go to Home Theater section, and click on HC-6.

I think this combination has the best cost/performace ratio for a good 5.1 system under $1000.00

Mike
Receiver: Sony str-de685 (Cost at authorized dealer $300 or on the internet for approx. $220)

Speaker System: Polk RM6000 highly recommended!
At crutchfield.com for $300 dollars.

The receiver has 32-bit processing and plenty of inputs. Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS, and Pro-Logic II.
The speaker package includes a powered-sub. For $300 dollars ther're a steal!
