Underworld....
and Matrix parts 1&2....

Oh yes, the SVS liked both:-)

Those artsy'fartsy flicks are for the birds. You definitely need to play 'real' movies if you expect a 'movie' experience.

Please...lay off the freaky foreign crap.

Hey Paul - With each of your posts I become more and more convinced that you're trying desperately to convince others (as well as yourself) that you're a "real" man. Whatever you do, don't stop -- it's getting funnier and funnier. :-)

Hahahahahah

I love the matrix movies. I might watch part 3 tonight:-) I had to keep part 2 'toned down' last night because it was after the wife and kiddies went to bed, but oh boy.......The underworld and Part 1 were awesome!!!

I need to find a way to keep pictures from rattling against the walls. What have others done to combat this??? I was considering glueing felt squares on the corners of the frames??? Or maybe rubber nubs??

Any thoughts???

In fact, I think I'll create a new thread for this topic.

As you may or may not beware I'm a former cinema projectionist, and though I like the Matrix 1 2 and 3 as well as Underworld too, as these are bas heavy films, the matrix won the Oscar for best sound and sound effects editing 1999,

And though I don't own an SVS sub bass I have been using the JBL 4645 THX approved cinema sub bass for little as 7 years now and films like the ones above have no problems in there ability to impress me first time and every other time.

There are some classic Dolby stereo film mixes in the DVD library now that won the Oscar for best sound and sound effects editing films like

Thanks for the list, Andy. Great info!

Personally though there are only a handful of those films I could ever imagine myself sitting through more than once: LOTR, Ray, Braveheart, Private Ryan (just the first 20 minutes only, the rest is schmaltz), Bird, Aliens, The Last Emperor, Apocalypse Now, The Deer Hunter, Robocop, Out of Africa. Of those films I listed, maybe Bird, Ray and Braveheart I'd consider owning if found really cheap at Walmart.

Paul would heartily agree, I'm sure! LOL

Recently seen action flick with great sound effects and actually more than four brain cells behind it: The Bourne Identity. Loved that German actress, and all the fight scenes were very realistic because they were using the Filipino art of Kali instead of all that bogus Tae Kwon Do most movies use.

Unfortunately the sequel, The Bourne Supremacy, was horrible...back to my Sundance list, yippee!

You go watch "Forrest for the Trees", and I'll stick with 'real' movies. Then again, I hear "This Charming Girl" is really good..........HEHEH

Tonights movie of the night was watching episodes 2-6 of the 'Band of Brothers' in memory of my deceased grandfather who served in Bastogne with the 101st Airborne. It's the most realistic 'true story' war movie ever made. For those of you who'd like a refresher course on history, I highly recommend it. I'll proabably watch the rest of the series again before the holiday weekend is over.

Those guys were and will always be true american heros.........
If it werent for men like those who gave their lives, all of europe today would be speaking German as a native language. If you live in the states, and dont have a flag waving somewhere outside your home this weekend..........shame on you!!

Edster - "Private Ryan (just the first 20 minutes only, the rest is schmaltz"

The scene with the knife battle ending in a slow demise disturbed me greatly, a true credit to the director who brought the sense of helplessness and horror in the face of war and duty through the whole movie.

Kano,

I guess what turned me off of "Private Ryan" after the stunning first 20 minutes beach-storming scene was all the cornball jingoism and that God-awful deux ex machine ending.

Spielberg always ruins his movies with last minute schmaltz, witness the horrible last 15 minutes of "Schindler's List" which is otherwise an amazing film. I think "Catch me if you can" is the only truly schmaltz-free Spielberg film I've ever seen in fact...couldn't believe it was a Spielberg flick!

Paul,

> If it werent for men like those who gave their lives, all of europe today would be speaking German as a native language.

I'm afraid you obviously have as incomplete and over-simplistic view of history as you do of audio.

Ever heard of the EASTERN front, Paul? If Hitler hadn't been such a moron as to invade Russia and hopelessly overextend his forces, he would've easily overrun all of Europe INCLUDING England before a single American boot ever crossed the Atlantic.

Remember, in 1941 Americans were strongly ANTI-interventionist. That's why FDR basically LET the Japs bomb Pearl Harbor even though our intelligence had already cracked their code and knew that an attack was imminent, FDR did nothing because he knew the only way to get us off our lazy @sses was to allow us to be attacked first on our own soil.

Stalin was a true monster beside whom the likes of Saddam Hussein is just a little dime-store hoodlum, but the Red Army deserves at least 50% of the credit for the N a zis' defeat.

I'm sure this little well-known historical fact doesn't get much play on Faux News though, that's why it's probably the first time you've ever heard of it.

Clinton News Network? Never heard of it.

I have heard of the Corporate News Network, though: its countless subsidiaries like Faux News, CNN, ABC, NBC, CBS, MSNBC, PBS on some days, Newsweek, Time, USA Today, US News and World Report, the New York Times, Washington Post, New York Post, Washington Times, LA Times, etc.

If you are looking for a full spectrum of news, do not limit yourself to the states -- sydney morning herald is excellent, as is the guardian -- both free online.

And had Hitler listened to his generals, he would have had Moscow by Winter of 41, the result of the war being far prolonged.

Movies of "Memorial Day".....yes, my 8 year old daughter wanted to see star wars in the theaters, so could I deny her that??

In spite of myself being 'anti' crappy theater sound, we went and we enjoyed the flick. Definitely a great 'daddy/daughter' fun.

Besides that, I couldnt believe how crappy the theater soundsystem was!!!! What the heck!! This theater is less than 5 years old and the sound was awful!!! Granted it was a large room to fill with sound, but my SVS in my teeny 20x25 room makes that theater sound like total dungheap. Where is the LFE effects!!!!!

The bottom line is this...the only way to get the 'full' movie experience is at home. After getting my SVS, my opinion of real theaters is that they sound like sissy weak little bookshelf speakers that go 'barely' loud...........and nothing more.

After returning home, I watched the 'origional' by watching episode 4, and the sound was 10x better. It just goes to show that nothing beats a Home Theater.

Born on the fourth of July

On the laserdisc format is a whole new kittle of fish, in the form of dts laserdisc side 1 is a perfect demonstration side for the ambient sound, and the scenes in on the battle field are done with accurate detail, in the bass sub baas and the LFE while the mono surrounds reinforce the sound with bullets whizzing though the air, and ducking for cover...

Tomorrow never dies

On the laserdisc format is a whole new kittle of fish, in the form of dts laserdisc with more gadgets, and more of the same, bond villain trying to takeover the world bond is forced into stopping the madman before things get out of control...
With a wham of an opening with the terrorists getting the day spoilt, by bond and the all hell breaking lose, with sound effects being hard panned and the spilt-stereo surround creating a three-dimensional sound filed, with bass sub bass and LFE, I'm surprised the room around me is still intact...

Last man standing

On the laserdisc format is a whole new kittle of fish, in the form of dts laserdisc.
Gangsters and mobs on different sides in a small town controlling the Drink, of booze and the war between them is about to be shaking up a little bit by an outsider looking for work, enter Bruce Willis "Die Hard" form directed by Walter Hill of "48Hrs" and producer of "Alien" this is a bloodbath of bodies falling left right and centre, and with only one man siding at the end.
Sound mix of dusty sound and grittiness to the sound filed is realistic with wind blow and the silence and emptiness of this town, soon to be awaking by a hail of rapped gun fire that will echo all around. bass sub bass and LFE is aggressive and care in setting the master fader as this will knock you back!

True lies

On the laserdisc format is a whole new kittle of fish, in the form of dts laserdisc.
James Cameron, yet again pushing the limits of visual effects and sound design to the next level in entertainment, with this action spy trailer Arnold Schwarzenegger blow anything up and leaving nothing but body bags to feel in its place.

Front stage three-screen movements along with a bonding score track to back-up all the action on screen, surround effects in split-stereo surround is one that is so effective on this disc and have some reverberation that shakes the room. With bass sub bass and LFE giving you home cinema one almighty workout of kick slam rumble and deep depths without effort or strain with the JBL system and via the Lucasfilm THX sound system this is a must have laserdisc with high bit rate in the audio chain and leaving the DVD region 2 in the dust, of pity...

More running and screaming and the wizardry of ILM proving yet again dinosaurs are alive and kicking and roaming around on a secret island.

The impact of the sounds and the placements of sound elements make this a most have

The split-stereo surround just fly past you with fast bit rate and bass sub bass and the LFE all go KABOOM with SPL reaching high as 116dbc!

This academy award nominated sound mix was nothing but deep, how deep, very deep.

Down the hatch and dive, dive, dive this is a high octane ride split-stereo surrounds and the three-screen channels giving localization to the claustrophobic interior of the U.S.S Alabama, and the stakes are raised high with the possibility of nuclear holocaust.

The bass sub bass and LFE will pound your home cinema to the point of nuclear meltdown this one leaves the region 2 crying out for dts.

Daylight after see this you are going to wish you took the bridge instead.
The effects by ILM, look awesome and realistically gritty with some gruesome scenes.

The split-stereo surround when played back in with centre back surround and height surround along with the three screen matching fronts is freighting effect and with bass sub bass and LFE bring the house down with the explosions and the rumbling effects, that reach 116dbc on the SPL reminded me of "Earthquake" 1974 in Sensurround, this one does Sensurround you with +10 on the Richter scale.

Ten... nine... eight...seven... six... ignition sequence starts five... four... three... two...one... ignition!

This is my desert island dts THX laserdisc by far, the film is perfectly set up nicely along with a human story about how do, you get back home in a crippled spacecraft some 250,000 miles away from home with oxygen and electrical power running low.

These three guys Jim Lovell Fred Haise and Jack Swigert, are the luckiest guys to make it though this with incredible odds.

From the lunching of the Saturn V rocket standing 336 feet high was the tallest of it kind, and a spectacle to watch.
With visual effects by "Digital Domain" and apart from looking very realistic was a treat for the eye to see.

The Academy award wining best sound for achievement lives me as it did the first time that I felt it in the cinema with fair impact to the laserdisc format with KABOOM!
Impact at 116dbc with the JBL giving no problems and Lucasfilm THX sound system
Re-lunching the might Saturn V, and taking mw along for the ride to is a must have and though the region 2 DVD has an nice image the sound with too much compression, leaves it a bit rate all time flat...without punch.

Watching "Star Trek II the wrath of Khan" on DVD is like being at the Empire Leicester square, London screen #1 when I saw this along with all five films back in Sunday of October 8th 1989 and with Star Trek the motion picture being in Dolby Stereo A type THX.

The rest was in the splendour of 70mm six-track Dolby stereo and split-stereo surrounds and yes LUCASFILM THX Ltd SOUND SYSTEM "The Audience is leistering"!

And it only cost £10.00 for the THX once in a life --time experience, unlike the Star Wars all day six films Monday May 19th 2005, and paying £50.00 thinking its in THX suckers you all got ripped off suckers, which did not have THX sound, as the Empire has uninstalled the THX 3417 crossover / monitor since 1998. That's because I'm a former cinema projectionist for UCI and Warner village cinemas UK and know these things

In THX Dolby stereo six-track with mono-surrounds and the LFE hitting 108dbc WOW

This film is so audio complex with sound mixing it's a treat and its far better the Re-release directors cut the sound mix on that is a total mess originally the first DVD released back in 2000 on region 2 was close to the 70mm six-track road show release of 1979.

Do an A&B test of the two films not the DVD directors cut which as two versions on it both audio mixes are the same the 2000 edition and the 2003 edition turn the left and right fronts off and A&B chapter 13, 2003 edition and chapter 25, 2003 and listen very carefully and you will hear the differences in the two versions.

Just throat I give the Laserdisc a run today with some classic like 2001: a space odyssey KABOOM in THX nice.

And though the DVD version has had all that was once the original as been ripped out of it, where the hell has all the dialogue panning gone to.

Dame those mixers who did the DVD version DONKEYS, just stick to (Britney and those NAFF music mixes) and leave the films to people who know the nix backwards...professionals not DONKEYS!

Arr that sounds better I like the sound of dialogue panning in the evening!

Hallo there

Sem.

Do you like "BRAINSTORM" too, it's not bad, and it's not that bad at all as a film goes though it was a shame about Natalie Wood's passing, very strange indeed.

Like cliff Robertson's deep low voice in two parts on the film one at the beginning on side 2 "Mike we'll keep this between us ok, dame"? Frequency down to 40z and towards the end of the film "let go Landan, just let go"? This one goes down to 64Hz!

As for James Horner's score nice I like it's dynamics of percussion and the low end Kaboom, Kaboom and the French horns violins, violas and the softness of a choir thrown, helping to accompany the wizardry of Douglas Trumbull "2001" "Star Trek TMP" "EEG", Entertainment Effects Group, which was later sold to Richard Edlund of "Star Wars" "The Empire Strikes Back" "Return of the Jedi" "2010" "Ghostbusters."

I like the disc cutter scene "get out of the way and watch your eyes" I can feel that disc cutter, cutting into the door, with out the 107, to 109dbA SPL because those disc cutters are very loud in the dbA range as I have handled one of them as well as Chainsaws too and ear defenders on of course.

The special effects filmed in 65mm for all the scenes where we see the POV "point of view" shots this has a remarkable sense of detail and definition and depth to the images.

I also like the process of going from 1.85:1 widescreen flat lens for all the realty shorts and for the special effects scenes going to 2.35:1 scope with a fish eye lens, very cool and what an eye opener.

This process woks well in the cinema because it works horizontally rather than vertically on TV monitors, though if they worked at it harder and get it to playback visually as it was seen in the cinema, because, it falls a little flat on it's self but I the film makers know this and I know this too.

If you can get hold of the "Cinefex" magazine issue no # 14 Brainstorm-getting the cookie at the end

Though the DVD version of the film is NAFF no Dolby Stereo six-track mix only a 2.0 mix, I guess the Gaza at the DVD pressing plant had too much coffee!!!

And totally forgot that this film was exclusively realised in 70mm Dolby Stereo six-track mag, what "DONKEY".

When is MGM home DVD going to get it right!!!!

Any way, "THE DOOR TO THE MIND IS OPEN"!

As for the remake made towards me try getting my job back as a projectionist...
...I liked that remake made my laugh though.

I like it hear, its nice and quite and we can all speak are mind with my fingers typing away in soft or loud words of expirations, that's what's makes us human, and the spirit with in us to go on tell time says, time is now going to end...

Well until that day comes which it will long by when I'm gone, I shall continue to say what I'm feeling and be it as it may be controversial too...

I like that...

"The Thing" now playing
Any way this movies of the night and since it night-time hear in the UK

And The Thing is playing in full Dolby Stereo six-track just like the 70mm road show Event the sound design is something, and when the LFE track cuts in on scenes like the flame thrower, on chapters 27 and that thing spider-head, man give me a break that's a creepy thing or two.

"You got be F**king Kidding"

This movie re-make of the classic 1950's "The Thing from another world" is far from being outdated in visuals and sound, hail to the classic of movie Horrors John Carpenter.

P.S. get stuffed!!!

Edster 922

Good on you mate!
I may sound controversial to many, it's not my intention to make insults to my allies, which I take back what I said earlier with great heart.

If someone doesn't like what I have typed then please don't responded to it, and please don't take this personally please don't.

Any way IMAX DVD's have a soundtrack that will blow your socks off!

There is large range of titles to chose from, and I only have around 7 titles so far a little hard to get hold off over on this side of the world?

Ghosts of the abyss THX DVD Dolby 5.1 dts 5.1 this was an emotional one and there for I wont say much, but that it was good though.

Hunted Castle Dolby 5.1 this I saw around 4 times at the IMAX in Bournemouth when it opened, wow those Sonics loudspeakers in the IMAX cinema are fantastic, like to have them in my home cinema, there goes the neighbourhood!

T-Rex: back to the cretaceous Dolby 5.1 rubble me T-Rex!

Mission to Mir Dolby 5.1 there's not much to say hear, that its good though.

Hail Columbia Dolby 5.1 this as got a good example of dialogue panning from centre to left and right fronts to the split-stereo surrounds left side right side and centre back surround with the press asking the flight crew of Columbia John Young and Bob Crippen awkward questions and the dialogue just moving all around this placed me within that room, very good and the lunching of Columbia is a must see hear and feel WOW its pretty close to the being real as an approximation of the acoustic event.

The dream is Alive Dolby 5.1 this has got a whole lot of low end and can be in your face at time though, so practicing the 85dbA for maximum SPL for safety with mid lows climbing to 110dbC and if I wanted just a little bit more that edge to push you over?

That's no problem, with nearly all the IMAX DVD's presenting spectacular sound all get a
High rating for picture and sound all over there is only one that ok has very difficult to see end credit titles "Haunted Castle" and also being in the 3-diminsional process really needs a huge screen to see those bobbles flouting around!

Check it out.

Cheers again Edster922 and I do appreciate it.

And on the mater of movies of the night add this to the DVD all time greats!

Robocop on DVD 5.1 with mono surrounds.
Home THX JBL playback for bass sub bass and LFE
Richter scale rating +10

In Dolby Stereo digital and the ED 901 or is it the 902! Can't remember but the bass sub bass and the LFE on this, is nothing short of spectacular.

Winner of the 1987 academy award best sound effects editing for Steven H. Flick and John Pospisil.

The scene where Robocop busts the drug factory is something music plays spot on with all the rapid gun fire ricochets wow!

This was the first film to use Dolby SR as it was firstly used widely within the music industry.

When Robocop played at the CIC cinema High Wycombe in 1988 with the new THX auditorium with JBL the projectionists and representatives had to say this is not 70mm!

Its frequency range was greater than Dolby A type, and approach near digital playback was remarkable.

Robocop was released exclusively in 70mm Dolby six-track to premiere cinema houses.

And to those cinemas that have brought the new Dolby SR cards to exhibit the playback of the film Dolby SR is hear to stay and yet again making films sound better.

Hallo there, the same can be said about the weather hear in sunny southern Dorset, a little humid, though that's the typical traditional British weather, anything else is just cricket?

"Your powers are wake old man?"

"You can't win Darth if you strike me down I'll become more powerful than you can possible imagine..."

Star Wars episode 4 a new hope.
Home THX JBL playback for bass sub bass and LFE
Richter scale rating +10

Lightsabers clash and the galaxy is about to be rocked be the power of the force in this space opera saga that closed the final curtain on 19th may 2005 with Star Wars episode 3 revenge of the sith, which was darker than Star Wars episode 5 the empire strikes back the story was sad in the telling of Anakin Skywalker turning to the dark side of the force and betraying the Jedi's by exterminating them to the point of extinction.

And what a showdown will only 5 to 6 months time now till its on DVD and with the new HD-DVD coming to a home cinema near you soon!

So I'll give Star Wars episode 4 another showing tonight and the force is strong with JBL and THX WOW!

Arr that John Williams score by the LSO, fantastic I like end credits music is so nice and rich and powerful, I might play Star Wars Episode 5 the Empire Strikes Back tomorrow and see what it registers on the "Richter scale?"

Earthquake 1974
Home THX JBL playback for bass sub bass and LFE
Richter scale rating +10

110dbc any much higher than 0db will rattle my teeth loose!

Although I can reach 120dbc if I was so inclined but not today as 8 minutes will be too much for taking.

It's better to share the Event with someone.

How big a quake?
A seven on the Richter scale, possibly higher
That could release more than the total energy generated by the Hiroshima and Nagasaki nuclear bombs combined.

Wow this film defiantly rocked me back in 1974 via universals Sensurround sound system, as with the DVD version the playback is very close to the 1974 70mm Sensurround Event...

So when chapter 8 comes in the next 8 minutes is a rattle and rumble that when played back via the JBL and THX sound system gives me Goosebumps and the JBL 4645 is the sub bass for LFE.

Wow this is loud, and overwhelming too, much energy, less is more, wow that better oh no hear comes another one!

That scene in the lift not cool, this still shaking me dame that JBL 4645 THX approved cinema sub sure can pack a punch, the earthquake is still rattling, KABOOM!

WOW man that has left my ears feeling a little wired, I don't like the back row the middle is spot on the balance of the bass sub bass and the LFE is smooth due to room modes and everyone has them.

The ABC screen #1 Westover Road Bournemouth, felt like the ceiling was going to give away any moment, sure glad it didn't though! Saw it three more times afterwards and still to this day I have Sensurround syndrome and still picking the plaster out of my hair!

Sensurround Horror Stories
..the projectionist consumed a lot more alcohol on the job than normal to try and numb his headaches from the constant rumble and vibration in the booth!

I took my girlfriend to see "Earthquake" and she complained about a sick stomach! We were in the balcony and it felt like it was a roller coaster at times.

When The Branmar Theater in Wilmington, DE, which had shown all the Sensurround films closed in the late 80's, you could still see the cracks in the ceiling from the process!

In Billings, Mont. they opened "Earthquake". A knickknack/china shop occupied one of the storefronts. Needless to say, the morning after the opening all the wall-mounted breakables were in pieces on the floor. For the rest of the run, that store had to take down all of their wall displays every night and put'em back up the next day!

I received an e-mail last night from a gentleman in England who's wife got a nose bleed watching "Earthquake" in Sensurround!

Ceiling tiles would vibrate loose and fall on the audience, giving the true earthquake effect. On "Battle of Midway", I walked inside on one of the rear beasts [speakers], and it was vicious.

The owner of a cinema in Luxembourg thought that the number of subwoofers proposed by the installer wasn't enough so he doubled it. Result was that the first time they played "Earthquake" the hotel next to the theatre was evacuated because people were convinced a real earthquake was happening

At the Fairlawn during the presentation of "Rollercoaster", it was found that in either theatre, the Sensurround noise would intrude into the sound of the other theatre. The only option was to run the picture simultaneously in both houses.

There were, of course, numerous tales associated with the running of this print ("Battlestar Galactica"), such as the elderly lady who lived behind the Fairlawn, complaining to the Toronto Transit Commission that they were running their subways especially loud at 8:00.

UA Fox Theatre in Hackensack, NJ. The theatre was an old 1800 seat Egyption Art Deco with an awesome balcony. Sensurround presentations ended when part of the plaster ceiling came crashing down during a showing of "Rollercoaster". Nobody was hurt, but the fact that 10 seats got crushed spooked the management.

At the Penn Centre in St Catherines Ontario the effect was so powerful the booth floor separated from its slab and sank 2 inches

At the Elaine theatre the shockwaves killed all the goldfish in the pet shop at the other end of the mall. One of the most interesting aspects of the Sensurround "experience" was watching the crowd reaction. I saw a couple people get up and run out of the theater in fear! Really! The down side was going to a movie in a auditorium next door.

Executive Decision

This one is a movie of the night, the bass from the three screen matching channels was awesome and transparency can be focused on easily with no trouble at all.

The split-stereo surrounds was powerful when accompanying the fronts with atmosphere sound and the interior of the aircraft too which when balanced and EQ, along with THX keeping the timbre matching smooth from fronts to back to the sides and as well.

Jerry Goldsmith's score is low end powerful and yet another great from the master of film score.

Though this is not the film to end all films it great entertainment for the evening running at 2hrs 7mins.

The sound mix reached 110dbc on the heavy moments, and though the dialogue sounds quite throughout, don't be tempted to turn the centre channel up to compensate for this, if your centre channel is not matched like the other two loudspeakers, there is some full spectrum range down to 20Hz so there be careful.

The image framed at 2.35:1 scope ratio is rich with detail over the Laserdisc that I once had, the colours are soft in tone texture and though it looked close to the print that I saw in the cinema, that can hold up many times over on DVD.

So make this evening an Executive Decision.

This is an all time classic that ages like a mature wine over the years, watched it last and the lines are so nicely written are they don't make them like they used to do they.

"Of all the gin joints of all the towns in the world she walks in to mine."

So play it tonight if you have had enough of the Bruce Willis and the Arnold Schwarzenegger

And play something on the soft side.

If she can stand it, I can play it.

I like the textures and colours on this film and the soft grain and the lighting is very viewable for a film that is 19 years old, wow 19 years ago, time fly's by.

The sound mix could have, had split-stereo surrounds, but mono as to do for this one the L.F.E is used sparingly while the front three screen as most of the bass, with directional cues to the hard left and right with some in-between sounds left centre and right centre, with some upper centre sounds that are active throughout the films running time.

The upper centre channel if anyone likes to rig one up matching loudspeakers most be used, a few EQ's to balance it, with the rest of the front channels, anyway I've got to go now..

Just saw "The Decline of the American Empire" last night. Contrary to the title, it has NOTHING to do with politics, except for sexxual politics that is.

Basically about 4 couples and one ggay man talking and talking and talking about sex/dating/marriage from all kinds of angles and approaches. Luckily they are all academics so they have interesting things to say, surprisingly very un-PC at times, and the non-American cultural perspective is refreshing.

Very interesting but does take a little effort (they're all French Canadians with a lot of the infamous French drama queen tendencies) to stay with...precisely the kind of movie that'd drive Paul NUTS, heh heh.

The sequel, "The Barbarian Invasions" is easier to watch because it has more of an actual plot, also recommended.

These are both movies of ideas, so as you can imagine not exactly blockbuster types.

don't you ever just RENT movies, Paul? That way you can be more experimental instead of sticking to the same old safe genres all the time.

I highly recommend Netflix: awesome selection, price and service, no late fees either. When you watch something you really like, THEN you go buy it.

no....

Well, I rent the Sopranos, but that's about it. I used to rent a lot, but not anymore. Of all the DVDs that I own, it's safe to say that I have very few 'clunkers' in the archives.
What's the biggest clunker of the year???

Definitely "God And Country". It's an old Denzil Washington movie where he plays an english cop. Terrible movie, and I still havnt watched it all.

Once you have an archive totaling well into the hundreds, you wont even want to rent anymore. On any given evening, if you suddenly feel the urge to watch a movie, you'll always have plenty on hand to choose from when that moment strikes. Providing you know yourself, likes, and dislikes, it's not too hard to be batting 95% when buying new movies.

I guess I very seldom buy movies because there are very few movies I've seen that I can enjoy as much the 3rd or 4th time as the 1st time.

I can listen to a piece of music hundreds of times, read a book dozens of times, but for some reason most films quickly lose their magic after a small handful of repeat viewings for me.

I'd break it down like this:

35% of movies I watch I wouldn't really want to see a second time. (The average mediocre Hollywood mainstream movie or a mediocre foreign/independent film.)

35% of movies I watch I can enjoy maybe 2-4 times.
(LOTR, The Bourne Identity, Terminator)

15% of movies I watch I can enjoy maybe 4-8 times. (Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill, Internal Affairs, One Night Stand, Amores Perros)

15% of movies I watch I can enjoy an unlimited number of times. (Eternal Sunshine, I Heart Huckabees, Pleasantville, Punch Drunk Love, The Graduate, The Tin Drum, Trainspotting)

So as you can imagine I own probably 10-20 times more books and CDs than DVDs.

Once you've built up enough movies, you find that you dont watch any 'one' movie very often. I probably dont even watch my 'cult' favorites more than a couple times a year.

On any given night if I feel the sudden urge to watch a movie, I'll just scan the rows of DVDs until one catches my interest, and I'm never disappointed. Usually I'll be in the mood for a specific genre, and whether 'genre of the night' is a comedy, drama, fantasy, blow-em up movie, or whatever........I'll have something available that's exactly what I was looking for.

Sometimes I'll watch a movie that was 'just' ok the first time around, and 8 months later when I watch it again, I'll like it more.

Psycho 98

Time: 100 mins.
Rating: 15
Genre: Horror/Suspense/Drama

Psycho 98 the released in 1998 is the classic Alfred Hitchcock psychological thriller chillier...

This remake version directed by Gus Van Sant is a real treat and I was less convinced this would ever work at all, and was I wrong so hears my own view on it...

Norman Bates played brilliantly by (Vince Vaughan) as the troubled motel owner with split-personality disorder originally played by (Anthony Perkins) who was
typecast as the man in the shower scene...

The plot is basically the same, with the exception of doing this in colour and with multi channels Dolby six-track works as a whole perfectly...

From the slow strings moving to the universal logo then suddenly slamming you in the chest (Danny Elfman) rescoring and conducting the original works of (Bernard Hermann) is fantastic after hearing it so many times in mono, is startling and rich with detail heightens the visual images on the screen, and the usage of colours are lighted nicely by director of photography (Chris Doyle) H.K.S.C.
Upload

So Marion Crane played by (Anne Heche) who steals $400.000 dollars from her boss's client decides to leave town with the money, after a long road journey the police following her and changing her car at a used car sales showroom in an attempt to throw the police of her tail...

Marion, feeling very paranoid and weary checks in to the Bates motel, where see meets Norman Bates.

And after a slight introduction a sandwich and some small talk, she decides to get some sleep, before tacking a shower, unaware someone is sneaking in the bathroom behind her, as she turns at the same moment she hears the shower curtain and seeing the darkened figure looking at her, and the classic scream is chilling to say the least the whole scene gives makes me feel uneasy...
Upload

And the rest of the film as it unfolds with characters from the original popping up like Arbogast the private investigator played by
(William H Macy) ends in a sticky situation.

Lila Crane played by (Julianne Moore) and Sam Loomis played by (Viggo Mortensen) are all looking for Marion.

With a chilling ending, Lila finding the corpse in the fruit cellar is more than

scary...

The extras on the disc are ample with audio commentary with Gus Van Sant, Anne Heche, and Vine Vaughn.

Psycho path (the making of psycho, production notes cast and crew notes

Theatrical trailer

Screen savers

Final conclusion acting is fine throughout the 100 minutes running time and seeing how it comes close to the original about 99.998% leaves this

Sound is nicely recorded presented hear in Dolby 5.1 with stereo surrounds that have some wild panning of sounds on chapters 4 and 5 also dialogue passages are warm and vocal sounds extending down to 100Hz nicely and show no problems with any
Competition with music or sound effects, Foley work is also realistic with foot

steps and other prop handling.
And the rain effects I can just feel the down pouring with lots of detail, with this showing I have used the upper centre channel or the voice of god...

This places sound information above the usual centre channel the rain filled in the gap at upper centre with focused positioning.

Rating this film is a 9/10 for the film, picture 10/10 crisp and sharp, sound 9/10

Earthquake

When the catastrophic earthquake of all time rips though southern California, it levels Los Angeles, and sends shockwaves though the lives that live there; Charlton Heston heads an all star cast, in this blockbuster.

opened in November 1974 and racked in $80 million in the U.S.

And won two academy awards for best visual effects and sound, the sound on the film was the most publicized effect which was dubbed 'Sensurround.'

So if you have a very good sounding home THX sound system, with three-screen matching loudspeakers with good control of the split-stereo surrounds on this mix to produce uniform excellence over the room and to top it off a very powerful sub bass.

This is the matching JBL control 5 for the front that I'm using and same for the stereo surrounds and for the centre back surround the JBL HT-1F an d all the split-stereo surrounds can play up to 105dbC weighting including the fronts while the sub bass can easy hit you at 120dbC weighting but would be too much for taking on chapter 8 of earthquake which last just under 8mins so 105dbc weighting will suffice.

As safety is paramount and this is still the best earthquake film over Dante's Peak, more on Dante's Peak later.
