If you plug your phono jacks into your sound card and get a decent signal, you have a ceramic cartridge (the equalization is probably really bad). If you get a very weak signal you have a magnetic cartridge and you will need a preamp with the proper equalization. You may want to look at one of my web pages.

Since there aren't many ceramic cartridges on the market anymore, I'm going to guess you have a magnetic cartridge. (It is the cartridge and not the turntable which determines what type of pre amp you require.) Telling us what type of turntable and cartridge you own would help us give the correct answer.

Here's my guess;

If your complete turntable cost less than $99, you have a ceramic cartridge.
If your complete turntable cost more than $100, you probably have a magnetic cartridge.
If your complete turntable cost more than $100 and the dealer asked you which $1000+ cartridge you wanted, you probably have a moving coil cartridge. I'll bet you'd know if you had a moving coil cartridge.
