Bass guitar with a guitar amp

can you play a bass through a guitar amp? i've been told by someone that you can, but you the quality wont be good. I've read on here though that a guitar amp cant handle a bass.

If you have a guitar amp, and you brought a bass home just to try out, then yes, you can use the amp. And you can use it as a quiet practice amp. Or, I suppose, a low level guitar/bass duo type thing. But that would be the extent of it.

If you're thingking of buying a guitar amp to use with the bass you have sitting at home... maybe it's real cheap, or a friend is selling it.... skip it. Get a bass amp. Your initial post is pretty much on target.
