Sony makes crap audio products IMO. High distortion and a thin tinny sound plagues the low-end models. While the ES line performs better, I find the cost/performance benefit doesn't add up when comparing to competitors.

The Pioneer 1014Tx is a stronger performer within the same price range.

If you found your previous Pioneer's sound too flat take a look at the Yamaha HTR-5790 or the RXV line preferably.

Marantz also makes good receivers at that price point. Take a look at the 4400.

I agree with Kano, non-ES Sony receivers suck big time. Their DVD/CD players aren't too bad though for the money.

If $200 is your absolute limit then you'd be better off going with a refurb Onkyo 502 from ecost.com for $190.

The Pioneer 1014 would be much better but around $350-400.

OK, then do the Onkyo, it'll still be way better than a Sony.
