Yamaha Rxv 450 or Marantz SR 4400?

Which would be better for a pair of Wharfedale Diamond 8.1s? (I'm also considering the 9.1s). I'm leaning towards the Marantz SR 4400 but am getting the Yamaha cheaper. Is Yamaha good? Occasional movies. Lots of music. I listen to all kinds of music besides hard rock, metal, etc.

yamaha is a great receiver but most people tend to agree that for movies, yamaha is better. but for music, that vote goes to marantz. me i like them both. But if i were you, i probably get the marantz sr-4400 or it replacement the sr-4500.

I bought a Yamaha RX-V450 about two weeks ago and in the beginning I was not sure if it was a good buy until I fiddled with the manual setup and found some settings that appealed to me.

The Yamaha seems like a good option, but I cannot comment on Marantz.

Another thing to bear in mind is the size of your listening room. Mine is huge and in hindsight, I should perhaps have gone for a more powerful Yamaha receiver, but if I stick to the budget, I will never be 100% satisfied!

In my neck of the woods(South Africa) there is not such a wide variety of brands as in the US and brands such as Marantz is sold only by specialist shops that overcharge by a couple of miles! Must say, I have thought of setting up a Web shop selling Audiophile equipment at realistics price in S.A. and who knows I may still do that!

Anyway, just my penny's worth!

Hi Shahrukh

Current I an old pair of B&W DM560 speakers as fronts, Wharfedale Atlantic Centre, Wharefedale Zaldek powered sub and Tannoy Mercury MX1 as surround speakers.

I am planning on replacing the front speakers with floorstanding speakers shortly and am shopping around to see what I like. Just reading the specs of the Cervin Vega CV-12F's got me very excited, but I still have to find a local distributor.

Previously I stayed in an apartment with a much smaller listening room and the same setup with my old receiver sounded lovely, but that was a separate room, meaning the only opening was the door leading from the room, whereas the current area is open plan and more than twice the size.

As mentioned, if you have a tight budget and depending on where you are in the world, Yamaha is probably the best option. If you are in the US, you have a much wider selection to choose from such as Harmon Kardon, Denon, Marantz, Pioneer Elite, NAD, Rotel, etc. All of these converted to our local currency are dirt cheap! Just a comparison, the price I paid for my Yamaha receiver converted to $ was $600 and if I went to a "not such a audiophile!" speciality shop the cost would have been $850! Now compare that to adverts I saw on the Net for the same receiver selling for between $220 and $280!

I suppose its a case of you have to accept the limitations of the country you live in!

Cheers
