Receivers with DTS 96/24

Anonymous

Hi:

I am looking at 2 H/K receivers, one with DTS 96/24 (AVR 430) and one without it (AVR 525, from last year). If I have a DVD player with DTS 96/24, do I also need a receiver with this decoding in order to enjoy this feature. It is my understanding that for other types of decoding, you can use the DVD player decoder and just feed the 5.1 analog inputs to the receiver.

Thanks

P.S. I think this is true for HDCD, but I am not sure.

Every DVD-player can pass-through a 5.1 DTS 96/24 signal, but then it needs support from the receiver. I haven't yet seen any DVD-players with DTS 96/24 decoding, only ordinary '48kHz' DTS.

But yes it is possible to have a DVD-player with analog 5.1-out and DTS 96/24 decoder.

I'm looking for AVR230 (or AVR325), NAD T743 or Marantz SR5400. The Marantz is the only one with DTS 96/24, but it's also the most expensive and very deep (463mm ~18 1/4 inch).

My understanding is that there are still very few software titles with DTS 96/24, anyway. I don't know that it will ever really take off...

Thats true, i haven't seen any so far, but maybe in the future.

I'm a little confused about the use of DTS 96/24. Is it meant for movies or only audio? Isn't 96/24 multichannel also the format used in DVD-Audio? Is DTS 96/24 the same, or a little compressed or what?

My DVD-player can play DVD-Audio, it has 5.1 analog-out and DD and DTS decoders. It's digital output support up to 192kHz PCM-signal. What does this mean about the ability to play DTS 96/24? I belive I still need support from the receiver.

How about the DAC's on the receivers? is 96/24 (NAD) sufficent or do I need 192/24 (H/K, Marantz)?

I'll answer for myself:

There is almost all the info you need about all these DVD-A/SACD/DTS9624/HDCD/etc stuff.

If I got it right DTS 96/24 is basically DTS-compressed DVD-Audio and meant for audio only.

I meant that it is possible that DTS 96/24 decoding DVD-players could emerge in the future, but there is not such things available now.

Landroval,

If you use the 5.1 analogue out then the receiver is getting an analogue signal and it does not matter what its DACs can do, they are not in use.

DTS and DVD-A use the same PCM format but different compression algorithms. Since they are both 96/24 for multichannel, streets ahead of CD, I am doubful there is any audible difference, but have not personally had a chance to compare.

Somebody said that even lower quality 48/24 (or 48/20?) DVD-A sounds better than similar 48/16-24 DTS/CD/HDCD because of the lossles compression.

Though probably I wont ever even need this DTS 96/24 decoding ability...

I am thinking about getting an NAD T533 (with DVD-A) to replace my T532 (without, but with 96/24 PCM capability). I have looked at my receiver spec but cannot see anything about the DTS.

Receivers: Archive through January 07, 2004: What does"DVD-audio" mean here? might be of interest. It was my education on DVD-A, from this forum.

Let me just repeat that DTS 5.1 on the DVD-V part of the DVD-A discs I have is amazing, even when the recordings themselves are at 44 kHz, as some are.
