A TechLore "Ask the Experts" Question...

Question:

I have a TOSHIBA MW20FP1 TV/VCR/DVD combo. Why does my screen get a big black box sometimes? I cannot take it off except by changing channels and then it comes back again. Also how do I get the info screen off?

Answer:

The big black box you're referring to is related to the closed caption features of the TV.

There are many different modes for closed caption: CC 1-4, and Text 1-4. The CC modes place the text in a small scrolling box at the bottom of the screen, while the text box places a huge black box that nearly covers the entire picture.

If you enter the menu of the TV, you'll find a section related to closed caption. It's probably set to one of the text modes. If you disable the closed caption feature, the box will no longer haunt you when you watch TV.
