Specially Configured, Energy Star 4.0-compliant, Inspiron 531 Delivers Environmental Benefits Without Compromising Performance

Dell (NASDAQ:DELL) today extended its commitment to becoming the “greenest” technology company on Earth with the addition of an Energy Star 4.0-compliant desktop that helps consumers reduce their carbon footprint.

“We are committed to providing consumers a choice that helps protect the environment without sacrificing the performance needed to maintain a rich, high-definition digital experience.” said Karen Plotkin, director of consumer desktop marketing. “Consumers using this energy-efficient Inspiron 531 can reduce their carbon footprint while also reducing their electric bills.”

The specially configured Inspiron 531 is Dell’s first consumer PC to meet the Energy Star 4.0 requirements. Powered by an 80 percent efficient power supply, the system comes pre-configured to switch to a low-power sleep state after 15 minutes of inactivity and also includes a forest-friendly paperless owner’s manual. Using an energy-efficient desktop with a flat panel monitor for four years can reduce carbon dioxide (C02) emissions by approximately the same amount as not driving a car for eight weeks.(1)

With a starting price of $369, the Inspiron 531 is available to U.S. customers immediately. Entry-level configurations include an AMD Athlon™ 64 X2 dual-core processor, 1GB(2) DDR2 memory, 160GB(3) hard drive, CDRW / DVD combination drive, NVIDIA integrated graphics, Windows Vista Home Basic, and one year Limited Warranty(4) with In-Home Service(5) and support.

Dell’s Energy Smart Product Strategy
Dell’s Energy Smart product strategy is to deliver products that can provide the maximum performance at the least amount of power required. The company has actively participated in the Energy Star program since 1993 and offers multiple desktops, workstations and notebooks that meet the new Energy Star 4.0 requirements.

In addition to meeting Energy Star 4.0 requirements, the company is also advising customers on data center design to help reduce power needs.

Environmental Stewardship
Dell is also partnering with its customers and members of The ReGeneration – people of all ages who care about the environment – to become the greenest technology company on Earth.

Last month Dell became the first major computer manufacturer to commit to neutralizing the carbon impact of its worldwide operations. The company is pursuing an aggressive strategy of driving additional energy-efficiencies, maximizing purchases of renewable power and offsetting remaining impacts.

Customers who purchase the specially configured Inspiron 531 can help offset the emissions associated with the electricity required to power their computer through Dell’s “Plant a Tree for Me” program. The company remits 100 percent of funds generated through the program to The Conservation Fund and Carbonfund.org, non-profit organizations that plant trees in sustainably managed reforestation projects.
