The least-expensive LCD we tested in our eight-model LCD TV roundup for the April 2005 issue of Digital World, Syntax's Olevia LT30HV is best suited for budget-conscious buyers willing to settle for mediocre performance and limited features to get a really low price. Though the set is far from unwatchable, its flat, lackluster images in most tests earned it the second-lowest overall picture-quality score, trailed only by JVC's LT-32X575.

This 30-inch model offers such features as a dual analog tuner (for viewing two channels at once), an array of audio/video inputs, and a built-in sound system (two 10-watt two-way stereo speakers). It's one of the few units that have detachable side-mounted speakers. Noticeably absent is a virtual surround-sound option (included with most sets), but you can attach a subwoofer (not included) via a line-out port.

The on-screen menu and remote control are simply designed and easy to use, but some features found in other models are missing. There's no single control for adjusting red, green, and blue color intensities simultaneously, and the tint and saturation controls work only with analog--not digital--video.

The unit lacks audio and video presets (for movies, sports, and video games), and you can't save separate video settings for each input device (TV, DVD, or VCR). Documentation is rather slim, though it does include a glossary. And like the ViewSonic's, the Syntax's remote control can't operate other devices.

Pluses are detachable speakers and a low, low price. Minuses are relatively poor picture quality and a weak feature set.
