    Canon i950 Photo Printer

Ink jet technology has gotten so good, that seeing true photo quality output from an ink jet printer is no longer surprising. What's more, the devices produce output at reasonably high speeds. Although the $250 (street) Canon i950 Photo Printer doesn't have features like slots for storage cards used in cameras, the unit offers more than enough speed and output quality to earn the photo printer designation.

The i950 looks good, with its graceful lines and handsome beige, silver, and dark gray design. As with most photo printers, inside the box you'll find six ink colors—cyan, yellow, magenta, light cyan, light magenta, and black—for a wider color gamut than you get with just four inks. You'll also find a print head that produces 2 picoliter drops and resolutions of up to 4,800 by 1,200 dpi for fine ink-placement control. The extra colors and precise control contribute to the subtle shading you need for true photo quality.

As with most Canon printers, setup consists of installing a print head, snapping in the ink cartridges, and aligning the cartridges manually. Having to install the print head and a separate cartridge for each color takes more steps here than for most competing printers. But you can replace each cartridge independently of the others, which keeps costs down and makes this little hassle worth the effort. We can't say the same for the manual alignment routine, however—other ink jet printers handle this automatically.

Output quality is good to excellent. In addition to true photo quality on photo paper, the i950 prints photos at near photo quality on plain paper and produces good to excellent color graphics. Text is well-formed and reasonably dark, although not as crisp as text from a laser printer.

With 3,072 nozzles, the i950 can print its highest-quality photos at a fast pace. In our tests, 8- by 10-inch prints on photo paper required from 1 minute 15 seconds to 1:40, depending on the photo. In default mode on plain paper, an 8-by-12 photo took 51 seconds. Text speed was less impressive, at 2 pages per minute, but slow text speeds are par for the course with printers that are optimized for photos. If you print text often, you probably don't want the i950 as your only printer. But it's an excellent choice as a second printer for photos, and can also serve as a light-duty text printer.

I used to depend on photo shops and local stores for my Digital prints, but now that I own a Canon i950 I will never use them again. The 4x6 prints are as close to a photo shops prints you will ever get, infact I think they're better!, I can edit any print to my hearts content. I printed out a few full page prints and I was amazed on how GREAT it looked, good enough to frame. I have owned the Canon printer now for a week and have been printing picture after picture and I have yet to notice the ink levels lowering. I can see I will get alot of life out of these ink tanks. Overall I'm very happy with the i950 and I highly recommend it for anyone that really wants GREAT photo prints.

Beautiful prints, but if you print high-res. it is 3.5 to 4 minutes for an 8x10 print. Canon's advertising is very misleading. Spoke to their support, and the printer is only capable of accepting around 800kb packages of info at a time. Our old Epson 1270 actually prints slightly faster!! We print 8x10 photos from a high res. deigital camera, Canon's new 10D. Slow printing, but you can't tell difference in a photo-processed 8x10.

Right out of the box the images were better than recent dye sub images that I have printed.

I bought the i950 1 mo. ago and have printed out several pictures, mostly 4x6, using Photo Paper Pro. I defy anyone to tell the difference between these pictures and ones sent out to process. The colors are true and very professional looking. What others have said about using Canon paper seems to be true. I tried HP glossy paper with terrible results. It would be nice to pay less for the paper with similar results, but apparrently Canon is like the others in that they want you to use only their paper. I also use Photoshop 7 to touch up, so the two make an unbeatable combination. Bottom line, this far outshines my HP 960c and I'm very happy with this printer.

This is the finest photo printer around, right from the first print. The only minor complaints: 1) The printer's design look very cheap nothing compared to HP7550, cheap plastic look 2) the Printhead tension selection is located under the cover, so every time you need to change with different type of paper media, you need to open the cover. It would be nice if the print head tension could be driver controlled. 3) print head alignment has to be manually done, how nice the printer would align themselve automatically. Other than the above, Canon has done a very good job and the output speak said it all, and at a very reasonable price, and I would not hesitate to recommend to all digital photographer who want to print their phot on their own

This is my 1st photo printer, and it's truly amazing at how simple it is to setup and print. The printhead is also user replaceable, which is a big plus. It's so simple to pop in the printhead which just snaps on, ink cartridges, and align the printhead and off to the print races you go. Amazing quality photos - I get 4x6 borderless prints in 30 seconds using USB 2.0, and they're beautiful! I now have the utmost in convenience and flexibility with my Canon Powershot S330 digital camera, a Canon color scanner, and the i950!

This is my 1st photo printer, the output is absolutely amazing. I've shown my pictures to friends and they cannot believe that they were printed off my pc. The individual 6 color pens are definitely the way to go for keeping printing costs down. Printing speed is excellent as well.

Produces output as good as I've seen on my Epson 2200, but for much less money. Simple to set up and and the speed was outstanding attached to a slow machine.

This new Canon i950 Photo printer produces color prints that rivals traditional prints from film. The 2 picoliter print head, and 4,800 by 1,200 dpi resolution produces stunning color printing, especially when used with Canon's stock color photo paper. I replaced my Epson 850 Stylus Photo printer with this one, and the print quality is noticeably better.
