    Canon i850 Photo Printer

Despite its name, the Canon i850 Photo Printer ($200 street) isn't so much a photo printer as it is a general-purpose printer that does photos extremely well. It uses four colors, unlike most photo printers, which use six. You won't find such photo-related features as slots for camera storage cards, a connector for plugging in a camera, an LCD screen for previewing images, or menus that let you print photos without a computer. What you will find is an impressively capable printer that combines fast printing with high-quality output and an option for borderless printing.

The i850 is a bit wider and heavier than a typical desktop ink jet printer. It also has a more solid feel to it and a tasteful gray-beige-and-silver design that shows the fine hand of an industrial designer. Setup is simple and follows the usual steps for most Canon ink jet printers: You install a print head, then snap in four separate ink cartridges. Because you can replace each cartridge independently of the others, you don't have to throw out all your other unused ink when one color goes dry.

Both speed and output quality for the i850 come in large part from a new print-head design that delivers ink drops as small as 2 picoliters and resolutions as high as 4,800 by 1,200 dpi. The combination provides fine control over the placement of ink on the page, which lets a rounded object in a photo—an apple, for example—retain the subtle shading that gives a sense of dimensionality. The fine droplets and high resolution also ensure that even the thinnest lines, like the white numbers on a black clock face in one of our test photos, remain sharp and clear. The 1,600 nozzles keep the printer going at a fast clip, even at the smallest drop size and highest resolutions. On our tests, image quality was excellent overall, with crisp, highly readable text, brilliant colors in graphics, and true photo quality for photos.

The speedy i850 was nipping at the heels of laser-printers on our performance tests. It printed a 10-page Microsoft Word document at 6.6 pages per minute (ppm), taking just 1 minute 31 seconds, and a 30-page document at 5.7 ppm (5:18). Speeds for our test photos were also impressive. On plain paper in default mode, the i850 printed an 8- by 10-inch photo in 35 seconds. In best quality mode, the photo took 1:37. 8- by 10-inch images on photo paper and printing at the highest resolution took under 2 minutes 30 seconds each. And on 4- by 6-inch photo paper, the time dropped to less than 1 minute.

All told, the Canon i850 Photo Printer delivers a lot of printer for the price, whether you want to print photos or are just looking for a high-quality, general purpose printer. And at $200, you can't go wrong.

This printer delivers. The speed and quality are unbelievable. I must admit that at first I was a little hesitant to shell out what seemed like bit too much money for an inkjet printer. But this is no ordinary printer. Consider this: my computer is what one might call "ancient". It's a plain old Pentium (as opposed to Pentium 3 or 4 etc.) with a speed of just 133 MHz and 16 Megs of ram. It doesn't have a USB connection (only parallel port). Yet this printer cranks out documents incredibly quickly. It's hard to imagine the kind of performance a computer with a more up-to-date configuration would achieve. Also, the print quality is so good that draft mode is sufficient for most purposes. At the other end of the scale, the highest quality setting produces breathtaking results. Very nice.

I have been using the i850 for about 2 months. I have printed quite a bit of photos as well as documents. The printer performed flawlessly. The pictures are very good. Black/White documents are very clear. The printer is quiet. I still haven't used up the first set of ink yet. The ink cartridges are also a lot less expensive then Epson or HP. I'm very impressed with this printer.

I never get the speed that they show even using Draft mode. When printing photos the black turns out to be a dark brown and never turns out with great detail even under best photo mode.

I was a sworn Epson defender. Till now. Now Canon does what Epson should do. With the Canon i850 they offer a borderless printer that can spit out photos on high quality paper that ACTUALLY spare you the trip to the photo lab. And speed on documents....no idea about numbers, but you will have barely time to get up to the printer. Bottom line: Anytime again. Bravo Canon.

I am really amazed by the quality and speed of this printer. USB 2.0 really makes a difference and the drivers is full of cool little features and wizards. When there's a lot of ink on the paper it becomes warped, so I use 24lb paper for solid pages. That's the only thing

Bought this printer January and haven't had one regret. I've printed 8X10 photos as well as 4X6. Most I took with my digital camera, some not. When I show these photos to people they are really impressed with the quality of print. They can't believe these photos came from a printer and not a photo lab. This printer is quiet and it does print all photos quickly. Especially 4X6's. Does this in around 50 seconds. This printer has a 'quiet mode' for nighttime printing. Prints a little slower but if you need this option you won't be disappointed. Separate ink cartridges save money and they are refillable. I plan to use Canon specific inks which I already have on hand for refilling. Print head is replaceable. Text print is fantastic. Canon software for photos does support EXIF print. Software is very easy to use. Very happy with this printer!

I have a Brother MFC5100 and recently got a digital camera. The Brother was not capable of printing pictures and I went shopping for a budget photo printer. The first picture I printed looked like it came from a professonal photo shop. I had nephew that sent me a picture of his recent wedding via the internet. I printed it in a 10x12 and sent him a copy. He claims that the picture is of better quality than the one's he paid for. Ink cartridges are more expensive than I would like, but they do last I have printed over 60 photo's and the black ink cartride is starting to run low. Highly recommend. Can't tell you about it's ability to print letters for I have another printer that serves that function.

After months of research I decided to buy the i850, picking it over the Epson 825. The print quality on canon photo paper and regular paper is dark, not very sharp, and the colors seem dull. ie: tans had a bluish tint, burgundy looked black. Faces/hair had dark halo's around them. The canon photo record software seems useless, it doesn't do any of the photo fixing like mgi photo suite. This purchase is a big disappointment.

If anybody is looking for photo lab quality results from home, this is the printer for you. As a mid-range price printer $200, the photos look so good I couldn't believe it. With the 4 seperate ink tanks, you only have to replace the one that runs out, unlike HP printers tri color system! It also prints a borderless 4x6 in less than a minute. Install was a breeze and the canon software makes anybody look like a digital photo printing pro! I give it 2 thumbs up, Love it!!

The prints that I get from the i850 are just as good or better than the ones that were ordered from an online photofinisher. I have often regretted giving up film photography because I did not have the time. Now with my new camera, the i850, and Photo Shop, I have rediscovered the fun of photography.
