Mitsubishi is one of the few remaining manufacturers of rear-projection televisions, but since worldwide RPTV sales are on a steady decline, the company is stepping up with a new series of flat-panel sets. The 52-inch Mitsubishi LT-52148 ($2,999.99 list) features the latest LCD technologies, such as 1080p resolution and 120-Hz imaging, which help the set excel at displaying fast-motion scenes. Unfortunately, the 148-series' default picture presets resulted in images that were overly enhanced with excessive sharpening artifacts--including obvious ringing around the edges of objects. Also, the TV's color quality, while admirably consistent, exhibited elevated greens that left foliage and skin tones looking a bit unnatural. Add to this above-average power-consumption figures and a sluggish, unresponsive menu system and the LT-52148's positives are effectively muted.
