iBuyPower Gamer Mage 855

iBuyPower Gamer Mage 855
Full Set Tower Side Keyboard and Monitor

REVIEW

The iBuyPower Gamer Mage 855 ($1,300 street) looks pretty compelling on paper. The robustly configured desktop comes with a multitude of advanced technologies from AMD and ATI: a Phenom quad-core 9600 processor, 790X CrossFire-compatible chipset, and a Radeon HD 3870 X2 graphics card with 1GB of graphics memory. For its low price you get all that plus 500GB of hard drive space, 4GB of RAM, and a windowed case to show it all off. Unfortunately, this desktop's performance prevents me from giving it a hearty recommendation. While there's nothing inherently wrong with the Gamer Mage system, you can certainly find something significantly cheaper that exceeds its level of performance.

Bottom Line

With a quad-core processor and a dual-GPU graphics card, the sub-$1,500 iBuyPower Gamer Mage 855 desktop should be a real screamer. Its performance numbers, unfortunately, tell a different story.

Pros

Quad-core processor. 4GB of RAM. High-powered Radeon X2 graphics card. No bloatware. Lots of expansion space. CrossFire-compatible motherboard.

Cons

Graphics performance falls short of other midpriced gaming systems. Garish styling.
