Sharp BD-HP20U AQUOS Blu-ray Disc Player

Sharp BD-HP20U
BD-HP20U BD-HP20U A/V ports

REVIEW

Blu-ray's victory in the high-definition disc war has opened the floodgates for hardware manufacturers. The market is becoming crowded with new players, and Sharp's BD-HP20U AQUOS Blu-ray Disc player ($399.99 direct) attempts to stand out from the pack by addressing a common complaint—slow disc load times. According to Sharp, the player can deliver Blu-ray Disc (BD) video to the screen in less than 10 seconds, thanks to its Quick Start feature. Lab tests proved that this claim is technically accurate, but there's a catch. The player also took up to 20 times longer to begin playback of the main feature when compared with other similarly priced BD players. On top of that, the BD-HP20U doesn't support the latest Blu-ray features, sacrifices picture detail, and it's also the slowest overall HD disc player we've ever tested.

This Blu-ray player's quick start-up time doesn't make up for its overall sluggishness and inadequate performance.

Cons

Very slow at starting playback. Poky menu navigation. Clips detail over HDMI. Poor video processing with interlaced material. No indicator for 24-Hz video output.
