When I reviewed the Plustek SmartOffice PS252 document scanner in early 2007, my key complaints were all related to software. So when Plustek told me that the SmartOffice PS282 ($350 street) was essentially an improved version of the PS252, I had high hopes for it. The PS282 is extraordinarily inexpensive for a 25-page-per-minute (ppm) document scanner that can also duplex (scan both sides of the page at once) for a claimed 50 images per minute (ipm). That makes it a potentially ideal sheet-fed scanner for small offices or individual desktops in larger offices. Unfortunately, even though the scanner itself is reasonably capable, the package still suffers from important shortcomings on the software side.
