Hava Titanium HD WiFi

Hava Titanium HD WiFi
Full Set Angle Dongle and USB Port

review

When I reviewed Sling Media's Slingbox SOLO, I found it to be a capable and inexpensive way to watch your DVR or cable box from any PC anywhere in the world. The SOLO's simple setup procedure, lack of monthly fees, and great video quality only sweetened the deal. It had a major limitation, though—namely, it didn't support Wi-Fi. This means you need to run an Ethernet cable from your DVR all the way to your PC, unless you buy Sling Media's optional adapter that (oddly) connects to your home's electrical system. Monsoon Multimedia's Hava Titanium HD WiFi addresses this by using its proprietary VBooster technology to stream video wirelessly. That's extremely convenient if the Hava box is on one side of the room and your PC is on the other (or in another room, altogether). The Titanium HD WiFi comes with a built-in TV tuner, which allows it to be used in a Windows Media Center setup; hence you can even access the Titanium remotely without needing to connect it to a cable box. You also get the ability to time-shift or record live television as you would on TiVo. Unfortunately, the Hava Titanium's many skills sound better on paper than in practice: Setup snafus and an overall half-finished feel plague this product.

Bottom Line

In terms of features, the Hava Titanium HD WiFi one-ups the Slingbox SOLO, a super device that lets you watch all your TV shows on the road. But sadly, the Hava offers subpar performance and is difficult to set up and configure.

Pros

Built-in Wi-Fi capability. HD-compatible. Works as a PVR and time-shifts programming. No monthly fees.

Cons

Inconsistent video performance. No 802.11n or Mac support. Mobile client supports few phones. Can't schedule recordings. Setup procedure is clumsy. Persistent audio hum.
