No network troubleshooting toolkit is complete without a device-oriented monitoring tool. But you need more than just an up-or-down indicator for the devices on your network. A good monitoring system should also show problem alerts, peek into hardware inventory, and track trouble tickets whether they're open or in progress. Typically, you'd need to string together several systems to build such a service. Spiceworks 2.0 does it all under one application banner, and best of all, it's free. There are, however, some caveats.

Bottom Line

The Spiceworks networking management software package makes available a powerful combination of hardware monitoring, software inventory, and a help-desk application to a huge swath of SMBs, which often lack these important capabilities. Anyone responsible for a business network of any size should download and try this app right away.

Pros

Free. Easy to access, understand. Excellent selection of canned reports. Useful daily summary page. Embedded help-desk capability straight out of the box.

Cons

Very Windows-centric on the server and desktop/laptop side. No support for SNMP. No network testing tools beyond discovery.
