VUDU

VUDU
With Remote Right Angle Back

review

Internet-based movie services have been around for a number of years, and while a few have delivered successful solutions on the PC side of things (most notably Apple's iTunes store), extending the on-demand digital movie experience to the living room has proved a more difficult challenge. Many products, including traditional set-top boxes (like those from your local cable or satellite company) and other media extenders (such as the Xbox 360 Elite and the Apple TV) have promised to deliver on-demand video you can access right from the sofa. But these devices haven't been adopted by the mainstream because of various drawbacks, including expensive subscription charges, the lack of good content, and unimpressive video-streaming quality. Granted, Apple TV has made some excellent progress with its latest 2.0 firmware upgrade, but if you're not an iTunes fan, there's VUDU—a consumer set-top box that's dead simple to use and pumps on-demand video from a library of more than 5,000 titles straight to your TV. Better yet, you don't need a PC to use VUDU, and there are no subscription fees.

Bottom Line

The VUDU sets the bar high for what an on-demand, set-top rental solution should be. With a slick interface, impressive performance, and a deep selection of initial movie offerings, VUDU starts off on the right foot and may give Apple TV a run for its money.

Pros

Large storage capacity. Intuitive interface. Excellent remote. Large initial library of more than 5,000 titles. No subscription fees.

Cons

Lacks internal wireless capabilities. Can't manage content manually. No option to stream media from a PC. No way to transfer music to portable devices. Only 24-hour movie rentals. Small library of HD content.
