Altec Lansing T612

Altec Lansing T612
Top Front Right Angle Front

review

Altec Lansing's T612 speaker dock doesn't look very innovative—it closely resembles a previous Altec Lansing iPod dock, the M602—but it's the first speaker dock to play nice with Apple's iPhone. Until now, iPhone users have had to put their prized possessions into "airplane mode" when using a speaker dock, rendering the device's phone abilities useless. This was due to horrendous GSM buzz (caused by the cellular modem regularly reaching out to the network) that would otherwise occur and make the listening experience a lousy one. The T612, however, requires no "airplane mode" adjustments, and it is certified by Apple with the "Works with iPhone" logo (it's also "Made for iPod," if you're keeping score). You can receive calls and dial them when the iPhone is docked and playing music (but you have to pick the phone up to talk). The T612's audio performance is fine at medium-to-low volumes, but the dock is hampered by low-end distortion at higher levels—forget about using it for your next dance party. At $200, however, it may be the perfect office speaker solution for iPhone users.

Bottom Line

This speaker dock may have some low-end distortion issues, but the T612's selling point is clear: It lets you dock your iPhone, play music, and take calls without having to put it into "airplane mode"—something no dock has accomplished before.

Pros

Full iPhone functionality. Bass/treble controls. Useful remote. Well-balanced audio output.

Cons

Bass distorts at mid-to-high volumes. No TV-out. No speakerphone abilities. No menu navigation on remote.
