NetApp StoreVault S300

review

The NetApp StoreVault S300is a first attempt at winnowing down an outstanding enterprise-level platform to meet the network-attached storage (NAS) needs of small and midsize businesses. A few rough edges tell that this is still a work in progress, however. The system performs well and is remarkably expandable, so it's a good choice for SMBs that have rapidly expanding storage needs. Unfortunately, ease of use simply isn't as polished as that of other SMB NAS entries, notably our Editors' Choice in this category of NAS, the Netgear ReadyNAS NV+.

Bottom Line

The StorageVault S300 combines 3 terabytes of iSCSI RAID storage into a tabletop-style case with dual Gigabit Ethernet uplinks. The box is a great performer, with excellent upgradability into more advanced, enterprise-style storage infrastructures. Only a high price and an unpolished management tool keep it from an Editors' Choice.

Pros

Fast iSCSI performance. Compatible with external Fibre Channel and iSCSI storage area networks.

Cons

Unpolished installation. Proprietary operating system. Added license fees for expansion features.
