Gateway P-170L QS

Gateway P-170L QS

review

Once you lay eyes on the Gateway P-170L QS, you'll understand why Gateway's prelaunch code name for it was Godzilla. It's the sheer size that gets you, at 11.4-by-15.7-by-1.5 inches (HWD). Add to that its 8.5-pound weight and you'll want to think twice before strapping it to your back. Visually, the patterns embedded underneath the piano finish are a definite improvement over the previous matted designs. But aside from these minor enhancements and a seemingly attractive $1,299 (direct) price tag, the P-170L QS could use a little more to pump up the shopping adrenaline.

Bottom Line

The Gateway P-170L QS media-center laptop gets a much needed design refresh at a reasonable price, but the features and performance parts are middle-of-the-road.

Pros

New decorative art and laminate finish. Impressive storage capacity. Decent performance. Bright 17-inch widescreen.

Cons

HDMI-out port without an optional HD drive. Doesn't have dedicated graphics. Heavy. Only three USB ports.
