OPPO DV-980H Upscaling DVD Player

OPPO DV-980H

review

DVD players get no respect. Was it only a couple of years ago that DVDs and DVD hardware were the darling of the consumer electronics industry? Studios were making money hand over fist as consumers gobbled up new DVD movie and TV show releases. Consumer DVD players became affordable, but margins were still reasonable.

Bottom Line

OPPO ships a nifty DVD player offering high end features at a not-so-high end price. Video playback isn't perfect, but it's still pretty darned good.

Pros

Upscales DVDs to full 1080p over HDMI. Support for DVD-A and SACD. Lots of file formats supported. DivX certified.

Cons

Can't play back WMV files. SACD support is limited to just file playback. Noise reduction in high-noise scenes is limited. Audio playback lacks depth.
