Gateway T-140X

Gateway T-140X
Front Back Open Optical Reader

review

It's hard to remember the last time Gateway introduced a laptop that spoke to the younger generation. The sleek-looking Gateway E-100M (Core Duo) came close, but every other Gateway laptop design has lacked imagination. This was sufficient for Gateway's core customers, most of which work in education or government. The Gateway T-140X is a sign that change is on the way. It adopts an imprint-finishing technique first made popular by HP. Its components, on the other hand, are meant to attract the bargain hunters, and at $899 (direct), it's one of the most affordable mainstream laptops to hit the market this summer.

Bottom Line

Gateway decides to go with a trendier look this time around to keep up with its competition, but it seems to have forgotten about performance.

Pros

Trendy designs and patterns on the cover and palm rests. Very affordable. Large hard drive.

Cons

Performance doesn't meet Vista's requirements—a RAM upgrade is needed.
