review

Cell-phone technology may be advancing at a breakneck pace, but voice mail is stuck in the early 1980s. For example, you can deal with only one message at a time, can't save anything for longer than a month, and it's just plain time-consuming. I mean, let's face it, there has to be a better way then having to stop what you're doing, dial in, cycle through your messages, and laboriously search to find the voice mail you want. Well, now there is. SimulScribe impressed me early on with its accurate, visual transcription of voice-mail messages. I liked it enough to award it four stars in our February 2007 review. That service keeps getting better. Improvements include being able to upload a custom greeting and to choose among WAV, GSM, and MP3 file formats for your messages. Now SimulScribe has launched a companion product, SimulSays. If you have a BlackBerry Pearl or BlackBerry 8800, you'll want to at least try it, even if you're not a SimulScribe subscriber. That's because SimulSays lets you view, listen to, and delete voice-mail messages. It also archives them for as long as you want.

Bottom Line

For those who have a BlackBerry Pearl or 8800, SimulSays is a free cell-phone application that will change the way you manage your voice mail. Unfortunately, it officially supports just two BlackBerry models, and you'll find it tough to resist paying extra for SimulScribe, the company's useful companion software product.

Pros

Free BlackBerry app lets you prioritize and archive voice mail. Really saves time. Works seamlessly with SimulScribe transcription service.

Cons

Supports only BlackBerry 8100 and 8800 handsets. Sign-up procedure can get complicated. Sprint makes life difficult for SimulSays users. (This is not the fault of SimulSays.)
