review

The latest iriver clix, the gen 2 (using a naming convention borrowed from Apple's iPods), offers tons of features in a great design. Using flash memory like the nano, it comes in varying capacities (2GB, 4GB, and 8GB; our test unit was 4GB), priced in $50 increments and starting at $149.99 direct. Using the excellent click-screen interface from the previous clix (no scroll wheel-like controls here; iriver actually decided to innovate instead of copy), the newest clix is slimmer than its predecessor. Its active-matrix OLED (AMOLED) screen is slightly smaller than the displays on the iPod's 30 and 80GB 5th gen models, but has the same resolution—which makes for a sharper (albeit more compact) picture. And because it's AMOLED, the screen draws less power from the battery. The user interface is pretty intuitive too, and the graphics are cool (one background looks like vintage wallpaper). Also, did I mention the player sounds great after you upgrade the lousy included earbuds? If you're not tied to iTunes, the clix is an excellent choice that has plenty of extras, such as an FM tuner and video viewing.

Bottom Line

The second clix from iriver is a feature-packed, beautifully designed flash player that comes in all the capacities the Apple iPod nano does (2GB, 4GB, and 8GB). If you're not married to iTunes, the clix is a great little player that looks pretty darn cool, too.

Pros

Excellent user interface. Easy "direct click" navigation. Bright, sharp screen. Comes with Flash games. Has both FM radio/recorder and voice recorder. Good sound quality.

Cons

Terrible earbuds. Volume controls seem to operate backward. Can't use while charging or loading.
