Drobo

Drobo
Front Left Angle Front Open

review

I, for one, welcome our new robotic overlord, even if it's not a Cylon. Unlike the mechanical robots seen in factories and movies, the Drobo ($499 direct) is a "data robot," as its company (Data Robotics) and product name would suggest. It automatically formats and rearranges data on the hard drives you shove into its four-bay chassis. I originally thought (as many IT folk do) that the robot in the Drobo's name was an arm or mechanism that shifts the drives around within the case. But what the "robot" actually does is automatically move around your data, so you're safe in case one of the drives fails.

Bottom Line

Downloaders, video experts, pro and enthusiast photographers, take note. The Drobo is the drive enclosure you're looking for. It may be a bit expensive at the start, but its simplicity and future-proof expansion make it worth it.

Pros

"Unlimited storage." No need to muck about with confusing RAID settings. Nice, clean design. Easy-to-understand LEDs. Works on PCs, Macs, wireless routers with shared drive support, and expandable NAS drives with USB ports.

Cons

No drives included. You need more than one drive for data protection. Lopsided drive installations. No FAT32 compatibility (yet). No FireWire or eSATA. No included backup software.
