RCA Opal

RCA Opal
With Earphones Earphones Front

review

The marketing for the RCA Opal touts its "feminine flair and ease of use," making it "ideal for Mom." Don't women find this insulting? I mean, why does an MP3 player need feminine flair? I think both men and women appreciate the sleek design of the Apple iPod nano and the Samsung players. Furthermore, what part of making a product more feminine requires ease of use? Don't we all want ease of use? At least RCA's new Opal flash MP3 player is not pink. Sadly, it is rather unattractive, with a cheesy white and blue shell. Worse, I wouldn't even rank it near the top of my ease-of-use list. The Opal's saving grace is its price—it is quite affordable at $75 (list)—and that it ships with decent earphones. Even so, a counterintuitive user interface and a borderline useless video/photo-viewing function keep its rating down.

Bottom Line

A cheesy design, substandard display, and convoluted user interface are balanced by a low price and the best included pair of earphones I've heard.

Pros

Inexpensive. Snug-fitting, decent-sounding earphones. Works with Windows-friendly music subscription services. Voice and line-in recording. Comes with video conversion software.

Cons

Small OLED with low resolution. Navigation arrows are clumsy. Tacky design. So-so battery life.
