MediaGate MG-350HD

MediaGate MG-350HD
 Front Right Angle Back Ports

review

Media extenders, devices that pull content off your computer and put it on your TV, have become more popular with the launch of the Apple TV. And that very intuitive device has sparked competition, such as Netgear's Digital Entertainer EVA8000, which, sadly, is prone to crashes, and some that flat-out don't work. (I'd stay away from the Pegasus Cynalynx at all costs.) So, even though the setup process can be tricky, it's a relief to find that the MG-350HD from MediaGate actually works pretty well. If you're willing to get your hands dirty and install a hard drive (not included), the payoff is big, but make no mistake: This gadget isn't for the iTunes crowd.

Bottom Line

It's the best dedicated media extender we've seen, aside from the Apple TV.

Pros

Wirelessly loads its hard drive with content from your PC. Supports HD playback. Streams audio and photos from PC. Plays content off USB flash drives. Nice-looking user interface.

Cons

Lousy video-streaming capabilities. It's a pain to set up. Hard drive is not included. Manual needs a serious update.
