Apple TV

Apple TV
With Remote Bottom With Remote Bottom Right Corner

review

Editor's Note: This review has been updated to reflect the release of Apple TV firmware Version 2.0 on February 12, 2008.

Apple review, Apple commentary, Apple news... Everything AppleSince the late nineties, Apple has attempted to make the technically complex simple. The iMac did it for personal computing, and the iPod is a paragon of portable consumer electronics. Now Steve Jobs and company want to simplify your home entertainment experience with a new and improved version of Apple TV ($229). The original Apple TV was released with plenty of fanfare in early 2007, and we praised it for its dead-simple setup and operation in our original review. But so far it's been a niche product for the terminally iTunes-addicted.

Bottom Line

Now with an improved interface, more iTunes video content (including movie rentals), and a lower price, Apple TV might actually become a blockbuster home entertainment device.

Pros

Basically, an iPod for your TV. Can stream iTunes content from up to six computers. Could replace an entire stereo/DVD component system for non-stereophiles. Gives users the ability to rent and purchase content from the couch without a computer. Easy-to-use, efficient interface.

Cons

Requires a widescreen TV. Video resolution will irk some discerning eyes. While you can rent movies from the Apple TV interface, you still need to purchase them on your computer.
