Security and convenience seldom go hand in hand; more of one traditionally means less of the other. Plenty of hardware and software solutions try to change that equation, keeping you safe without forcing you to keep track of so many locks and keys. I tested the Access Smart Power LogOn Password ManagerUSB Reader, one hardware/software solution from Access Smart's line of products. The bundle consists of a smart card, a USB-powered reader, three self-adhesive smart-card labels, and a CD containing drivers, the Sphinx Logon Manager (soon to be Power LogOn Password Manager), and the Avery DesignPro 5.0 LE application for printing the labels. The solution uses smart-card technology to store encrypted usernames and passwords on a small card with embedded circuits. The Access Smart solution stores all of your passwords, including those for Windows, applications, documents, and Web sites. It's an appealing idea, but in my investigation, the practical results were profoundly mixed.
