If your idea of a perfect HDTV is one that includes a built-in high-definition digital video recorder, the LG 42LB1DRA ($2,599.95 list) is right up your alley. A 42-inch LCD HDTV, this advanced set can time-shift your favorite shows without adding extra clutter to your home-theater setup. Although the TV offers a stylishly modern design as well as some nice extras, my critical eye found its image quality disappointing compared with that of similarly sized displays.

Bottom Line

The LG 42LB1DRA is an attractively styled 42-inch LCD HDTV that incorporates a high-def DVR, but its disappointing contrast ratio and other image-quality concerns detract from an otherwise appealing design.

Pros

Integrated HD DVR. Swivel table stand. Quality remote control.

Cons

High black levels (poor image contrast). Ineffective advanced color controls. Slight banding noted in fine gradients. DVR does not support HDMI or component video sources.
