Those who love Google Earth will definitely want to take Virtual Earth 3D (VE 3D) out for a spin. If you're among the thousands who've already bought and flown Microsoft Flight Simulator X, I'm probably preaching to the choir; VE technology is at the heart of that game. Keep in mind here that I'm not dethroning Google Earth; we're not taking away its Editors' Choice in favor of VE. What I'm doing, despite the best efforts of the folks at Microsoft to confuse everyone with name changes, is simply allowing the Editors' Choice for local search that I awarded to Windows Live Local (beta) back in February to be inherited by its offspring, the less descriptively named Live Search. The addition of Virtual Earth 3D technology has only enriched the process of local search.

Spec Data: System requirements include Windows XP SP 2, Windows Server 2003, or Windows Vista OS. Internet Explorer 6 or 7. Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0. A video card with 32MB or greater video memory compatible with Microsoft DirectX 9 (with hardware acceleration set to Full). At least 250MB of hard drive space.
Recommended: 256MB of dedicated graphics memory. Broadband connectivity. 2.8 GHz or faster processor (should creep along on 1.0 GHz). A gig of system memory (to creep along, a minimum of 256MB).

Bottom Line

The cool bird's-eye views were enough of a draw in the previous version, but the 3D is downright addictive. This probably would be enough to please most people even without the local search, maps, and wealth of extra features.

Pros

Free 3D maps—in addition to the bird's-eye imagery, satellite imagery, maps, and lots of other features previously available.

Cons

A small download required. You must run IE 6 or 7. In coming months, expect to see increasing numbers of ads.
