It runs quietly, it packs dual-core power, and its 750GB hard drive, dual NTSC tuners, and single ATSC/HDTV tuner will keep you happy when it's time to record episodes—or entire seasons—of your favorite TV shows.

Bottom Line

The Niveus Media Center Rainier Edition 750 HD DVD is the first HD DVD-equipped desktop system we've looked at, and there's a lot to like. Designed for home-theater use, the Rainier features an A/V-friendly form factor as well as connections to your home-theater setup.

Pros

Quiet. Plenty of drive space. Well-labeled and well-spaced input/output ports. Dual NTSC and single ATSC/HDTV tuners. HD DVD drive. Integrated IR port. HDMI output. Wireless 802.11g networking.

Cons

Pricey. Not totally fanless. HD DVD is read-only. Microsoft IR MCE keyboard has wonky pointing stick.
