The 42-inch Philips Flat HDTV (42PF9831D/37) commands the viewer's attention with an adaptive lighting system that surrounds the on-screen action with colors to complement the picture. Dubbed "Ambilight Full Surround," this integrated "bias lighting" feature is designed to improve the way the screen looks. It's been offered on previous Philips TV sets, but this version works better than those past implementations. Unfortunately, the impressive lighting couldn't mask the TV's mediocre image quality, which means this TV is outclassed by cheaper alternatives.
