The Gateway DX210S ($948 direct, $729 without monitor) is stuck between the fully featured mainstream PC ($900 to $1,200) and the entry-level PC ($600 and below). It has a powerful Pentium 4 631 processor with Hyper-Threading and a dual-layer DVD burner, but unfortunately it has several problems that keep it from performing to its full potential. In particular, Gateway's choice to install high performance (but extremely loud) fans in the DX210S keeps it off of our recommended list.

Bottom Line

An example of some things done right, some wrong; the Gateway DX210S doesn't offer more than its less expensive Gateway and eMachines siblings, which is the biggest of its faults.

Pros

Dual-layer DVD writer. 15-month McAfee Security Suite subscription.

Cons

Cooling fans are too loud. Shared graphics memory impacts multimedia performance. 15-inch display is a little small these days.
