RCA H106

RCA H106
Full Set Angle Left Angle

review

Flash-based MP3 players are very hot right now, but the RCA H106 (catchy name, isn't it?) proves that small-capacity hard drive–based MP3 players aren't dead yet—sort of. This slim, 6GB player can fit behind a business card, and it has a scroll wheel for navigating lists and menus. The H106's lack of a color screen and of extras such as an FM tuner, however, is pretty conspicuous. The price, $169 (list) for a 6GB hard drive player, isn't a bad deal at the moment, but that will change very soon as flash-based players such as the full-featured SanDisk Sansa e200 series continue to drop in price. Interestingly, RCA also offers the H116, which according to the company is 100 percent identical to the H106, but the two have different distribution deals.

Bottom Line

Ultimately, the H106 is a bit behind the times, with its 6GB hard drive, monochrome screen, and lack of an FM tuner. If you really want just the basics, this'll do, but I'd save my money for a fuller-featured flash-based player.

Pros

Scroll wheel is smooth and precise. Simple operation. Good sound quality. Comes with an FM transmitter.

Cons

Weak playlisting features. Monochrome screen. Some operations are slow. No extras like FM tuner or recording. Below-average battery life.
