The Soundcast iCast ($299 list) is the latest in a seemingly endless line of iPod docks, but this is the first I've seen that transmits audio wirelessly to a receiver that you can connect to your home stereo. The transmitter charges your iPod and provides an auxiliary line-in port and headphone jack. The receiver gives you basic playback controls and analog RCA outputs. The special thing about the iCast, though, is that despite its reliance on the 2.4-GHz frequency band, it does not bow down to interference from anything. Thanks to an automatic frequency-hopping feature, the sound quality is crystal-clear even with the unit parked right in front of a running microwave oven. That's a feature I wish all wireless products had. Each transmitter can broadcast a single audio stream to up to two receivers (sorry, no multiple streams).

Bottom Line

The Soundcast iCast falls midway between the StarTech AirLink MP3 and the Sonos ZonePlayer system. It's not cheap, but it's a wireless iPod dock that's immune to interference.

Pros

Immune to interference. Excellent sound quality. Easy to set up and operate.

Cons

No remote control. Doesn't support multiple streams. Supports up to two receivers only.
