Specktone Retro

Specktone Retro

review

The Specktone Retro is an iPod speaker done in a 1950s style. Harking back to a simpler time, the speaker itself is very straightforward, with minimal controls and connectivity options. With an integrated subwoofer and two full-range drivers, this single-cabinet speaker system is housed in actual wood and charges your iPod via the integrated dock on the top. Available in black, white, or sea green, the Specktone Retro will run you $149.95 (list). Although design was certainly a priority with this product, the actual craftsmanship leaves a bit to be desired, as does the sound quality. The Specktone Retro fits nicely between products such as the Altec Lansing inMotion IM5 and the Bose SoundDock Digital Music System in terms of both size and price.

Bottom Line

I like the way the Specktone Retro looks—especially the green model with the brown grille—but its subpar craftsmanship and sound quality aren't going to win over many potential buyers.

Pros

Cool retro design. Powerful output for its size. Comes with two free iPod cases. Charges your iPod during playback.

Cons

Craftsmanship and sound quality are not up to snuff.
