review

The Geneva Sound System Model L is a CD player, FM radio, iPod dock, and speaker all housed in a single ultramodern wood cabinet. The focus of this product is as much on the design as on the sound quality, but it delivers quite a bit of power in a relatively compact package. Though some may see this as a competitor to the Apple iPod Hi-Fi, it's really a significantly higher-end product with more power and features—at nearly twice the price. The Model L provides a combined 100 watts of power and will run you $599 (direct), and that doesn't include a stand. (There's also a Model XL that's significantly larger and packs a 600W punch for $1,075.) The Model L does deliver what it promises, but it has a few limitations.

Bottom Line

Thinking of the Geneva Sound System Model L as a powerful contemporary-styled mini system wouldn't be far off the mark. Its sound quality and ease of use will make it an attractive addition to the living rooms of the tragically hip (and wealthy).

Pros

Attractive. Relatively compact. Excellent sound quality. Easy setup. Powerful amplifier.

Cons

Narrower sweet spot than with widely placed stereo speakers. No artist or song info on display. Labels on some remote-control buttons are hard to see. No digital inputs.
