review

The Audioengine 5 ($349 list) is a set of beefy, bookshelf-size powered stereo speakers suitable for any audio source but clearly designed with the iPod aesthetic in mind. Its standout feature is its built-in amplifier, which eliminates the need to hook up the Audioengine to a receiver: Just plug your MP3 player or other audio source directly into the left speaker via one of two 3.5mm audio input jacks. The left speaker has a USB port for charging any USB-chargeable MP3 player and an auxiliary AC power outlet which you can use to plug in an Apple AirPort Express device and run the speakers wirelessly from your PC. The Audioengine speakers themselves sound very good—competitive with the Apple iPod Hi-Fi— but they'd be even better if they had any kind of digital input. You can use any MP3 player with the Audioengine, because it has no integrated iPod dock.

Bottom Line

The Audioengine 5 has impressive-sounding powered speakers that don't require a receiver. They have some interesting features, but I'd like to see some type of digital input.

Pros

Excellent sound quality. Integrated power supply and amplifier. Auxiliary power jack.

Cons

No digital input. Speaker wire could be a bit longer.
