Audio/video switching receivers are fast becoming the center of the home theater. As they grow more high-tech (and, therefore, more complex), however, they can also be the hub of confusion. Something as simple as watching a DVD can be a multistep process. JVC is taking a whack at this complexity problem by introducing the JVC RX-D702B, a powerful sub-$900 receiver that's comparatively easy to use and set up and tries to compete with models costing twice its price.

Bottom Line

The JVC RX-D702B receiver will take up half of the space yet sound twice as nice as your old power-hungry analog receiver. But be sure to give it ample cooling and keep it away from your DVR. The sound is loud and crisp, thanks to a digital amplifier and digital signal processing. You can even connect it directly to your PC via USB or wirelessly, to stream music from your MP3 collection.

Pros

Integrated two-port HDMI switch. Digital amplifier and signal processing. Slim profile and great looks. USB connection to PC or Mac OS X.

Cons

Runs hot. On-screen menus are 480i only. Wireless dongle has a short range.
