Sony DPP-FP50

DPP-FP50

REVIEW

The Sony DPP-FP50 ($199.99 direct) is the second dedicated photo printer we've seen for 4- by 6-inch output that lets you preview photos on your TV. It's also the first with thermal-dye technology. As with the ink jet–based Canon Selphy DS700 Compact Photo Printer, which was the first to offer TV output, the DPP-FP50 lets you print from a PictBridge camera or computer, but the TV connection is the main attraction. And like the Canon printer, the DPP-FP50 is more of a consumer appliance in many ways than a computer peripheral.

Bottom Line

The Sony DPP-FP50 lets you preview photos from memory cards on a TV, as well as print from memory cards, computers, and PictBridge cameras. It offers good performance, but the photo quality is a touch below par for a dedicated photo printer.

Pros

Prints from computers, PictBridge cameras, and memory cards. Can use TV to preview pictures on memory cards. Thermal-dye output is waterproof. Good performance.

Cons

Built-in LCD is hard to read. Front-panel controls are confusing. As with most thermal-dye printers, cost per print is relatively high.
