If you like bass, you'll love the Sony MDR-EX71 headphones. Online opinions say that the bass is too thick and muddy and that there are no highs, but they're only half right. Our oscilloscope tests show that the bass is quite clean, not muddy in the least, and also that it extends noticeably deeper than that of other canal phones. The MDR-EX71s are actually a very good companion for players that are weak in the bass. We also found a double bump in the frequency response at 1.25 kHz and 5 kHz; the strong mids can overwhelm the highs, which tail off rapidly after 6.3 kHz.

Despite the sonic imperfections, the MDR-EX71s sound decent for the money—they are inexpensive for this type of headset—and they are very comfortable for extended wear. The headphones don't extend very far into the ear canal, but fortunately, they do stay put. Sony bundles three sizes of eartips, so you're guaranteed a good fit. We're not fans, however, of the short left/long right cords. Quieting: 10 dB; Frequency response: Bassy and bumpy; Comfort: Excellent.

They sounded pretty good when I got them. I was impressed, however after owning them for only around 3 or 4 months, the left ear bud doesn't produce hardly any sound if any, no matter how much I jiggle the wires. Expensive garbage. Steer clear!

I think I've bought 4 of these between my family and I. I've been unable to find any headphones with a better sound quality and comfort in this size for anywhere close to the price of these. They can be had for as low as $32! Also consider the EX51's-it's the same thing, just without an ext cord, for $5 less. Can't beat it. It's true, you can hear a sound difference if you compare them to, say, $150 "Studio Monitor's", but it's not bad enough to offset the comfort and portability of these.

I have had 2 different sets of these headphones, one I bought myself and one as a gift. The wire on the first one wore down and broke due to its soft gummy rubber quality. The second pair had a loss of sound in the left earpiece unless the wires was held a certain way. I think $40 should get you a product without structural flaws like this.

I am not sure why these are not rated higher by PC Magazine. For the price range these are execellent headphones. These things will blow your ear drums out and not sound distorted at all. I highly recommend these headphones.
