PQI mPack P800 Media Player

PQI mPack P800 Media Player

REVIEW

Having your favorite music, movies, and TV shows on your PC is nice, but being able to take them anywhere is even better. A slew of portable media players that handle audio, video, and photos have come to market, but the quality of these players has been all over the map. Memory maker PQI joins the fray with its PQI mPack P800, which combines a 40GB hard drive, a 3.5-inch LCD, and broad video and audio file format support. Unfortunately, this player winds up being less than the sum of its parts.

Bottom Line

Priced at around $600, the mPack P800 seems to incorporate some good ideas. But it feels like a late-stage prototype, and its software and interface need some more polish before this player is ready for prime time.

Pros

Good video and audio format support. S/PDIF digital audio output. Versatile card reader. Can record video and audio as well as radio broadcasts.

Cons

Fast-forward/rewind indexing for video playback doesn't work. Inflexible recording options. Many interface annoyances. Screen image quality not especially good.
